[slm],

Ok, now that I'm married, I have a question...It's about birth control. I know about the pill, and all the other things you can use. But, I want to know if we're allowed to use birth control pills? I don't really want to, because in my opinon, it doesn't sound like such a good thing to put these chemicals or hormones (what ever they are) into your body like that. But being that I'm in college and working, we're not looking to have any babies right now. I know though, if it's Allah's will, we'll have one when He wants us to. But, I'm just wondering about these things...

Wish I could give you an answer...but I know better. Really there are alot of different schools of thought on this and it would be wrong for me to try to guide you, especially on a topic like this.

To point you in the right direction there is a hadith where the man can use the withdrawl method, under certain circumstances.  ;) IM me if you don't know what I am refering to.

So here goes the answer ...check with your Imam.

Assalamu'alaikum

Dear sisters,

InshaAllah, I will be getting married soon, and I'm wondering if you could share with me
some experiences with the contraceptives.

What would you recommend and why?

I've sought some advise from my gp and she recommended oral contraceptives, after finding
out that I would not get any major side effects. I asked her about other side effects and
she said that most of her patients did not get much side effects except for a slight
weight gain. And that is also dependent on one's lifestyle, diet and metabolic rate. I asked
her about mood swings, hair loss and other side effects that I found out via the internet
and she said that the 3rd generation of Pills do not give such side effects unless to a
minute few. She also said that it would regulate our menses and would decrease its
bleeding days (particularly if one's menses stretches up to 15 days long)

So, she recommended Melanie (sp? I can't remember wot it is.. but is sounds like
Melanie). And there's another one called Diane (sp?) as that would help decrease acne as well as
body hair (if any). But Diane may cause some nausea initially.

I'm still researching on what she's saying and will ask for a 2nd opinion, inshaAllah.
coz, I didn't come across information on 3rd generation pills when I surfed the net. But,
in terms of experiences - I need to ask my sisters.

Care to share? Pls post anonymously, if you're not comfortable. I'd appreciate your
responses.

Thanks

Anon, I've done a bunch of research on this topic and ur doc is right about 3rd generation pills having less side effects as now, many of these pills are low dose.  It's true many of these pills can help with acne, reduce duration of periods, decrease pain, dec PMS symptoms, as well as decrease risks of certain cancers.  There are other medical benefits as well, but there is also an inc risk of breast cancer due to the inc estrogen; this is under research though with the current low dose pills.  BUT yes there are side effects that women experience, however they depend on each individual.  Some ppl do gain wt, but the wt they gain is like 1-2 lbs, and this is now decreasing; new research found that many women dont gain the extra wt and if they do its usually water retention.  Some women do get nausea for the first month or so, but its rec to keep with the pill and take it right after meals.  Also there's possibility of acne, facial hair, mood swings, etc..  But again this differs btwn individuals, and is decreasing.

I havent heard of the low dose pills u mention.  The current ones Ive heard of that have the lowest doses of estrogen/progesterone are Alesse, Mircette, Levlen.  I think itd be a good idea to go with the lowest dose possible.

For those that want to get pregnant, allegedly 6 mos after one gets off the pill it is a bit more difficult to conceive, BUT the 6 months after that, the former pill  users have increased potential to be pregnant, so its much easier.  But while one takes the pill, folate levels are affected, so it's important to make sure to take a prenatal vitamin before one attempts to conceive.  Folate fortification is the norm and one can get daily rec amounts by eating a good number of grain products (breads, cereals), it is still a good idea for those wanting to get pregnant to take the prenatal vitamins a few months before attempting to conceive.  :)

Wow that was a mouthful.... :-*   Hope that helps!!
WAssalam
