[slm],

Seeing the article posted by Sis Jannah reminded me, that, spreading FUD (Fear Uncertainty and Doubt) seems to be the prefered method when facts don't add up.

The chairman of Interpal UK, Ibrahim Hewitt, was interviewed on a BBC Radio5 program yesterday.
When asked, how does Interpal know that the funds only go to humanitarian relief, mention, that they made people sign for evey 1kg of meat they distribute... I wonder how many "normal" charities have to deal with such bureaucracy.

Still it's a little candle in the darkness...

Interpal cleared by Charity Commission

24-09-2003

London, The Muslim News On Line:

The Charity Commission today unfroze the assets of Interpal, and closed its inquiry" into Interpal, the British Muslim Charity which helps the impoverished Palestinians. "We are delighted and now we can get back to real business of humanitarian aid and relief of the Palestinians," Chairman of Interpal, Ibrahim Hewitt, told The Muslim News.

Interpal's account was frozen following pressure from the US and Israel, accusing it of funding terrorism. However, Interpal has always denied such accusations. "The fact the US has not been able to come up with any evidence, speaks volumes. I believe perhaps this was a political action,"said Hewitt.

The Charity Commission said that they "received no evidence to verify allegations that the Charity has links to Hamas' political and militant activities" and so unfroze Interpal's accounts. The only evidence that they received from the US were newspaper cuttings of unsubstantiated allegations, which the Charity Commission rejected, according to a source. The Commision added that the "American authorities were unable to provide evidence to support their allegations".

Board of Deputies in ‘outrageous’ campaign to ban Interpal

By Hamed Chapman

Interpal has instructed solicitors to start proceedings against the Board of Deputies of British Jews after Britain’s leading Zionist organisation was found to be involved in a malicious campaign to smear the Charity as a fund-raiser for ‘terrorism.’ The campaign is part of much wider attempt led by the US and Israel to deprive the impoverished Palestinians of all independent humanitarian aid.
The British Muslim charity told The Muslim News at the time of going to press that it was still awaiting a response, to an initial letter asking the Board to retract remarks on the front page of its webpage by its Director General, Neville Nagler, and to pay damages for libel. The next stage would be to issue a writ if there is no adequate response.
.......................

... The Muslims News contacted the Board twice to seek clarification but was told on each occasion that Nagler was at a meeting and unavailable to comment. There was also no attempt to return our calls.
Hewitt described the Board’s campaign as “outrageous” and linked it to the decision by the Charity Commission to freeze Interpal’s assets at the behest of the US and Israel. He said he “absolutely refuted” accusations arising from the Bush administration to designate the British Muslim charity as a “global terrorist entity” and had instructed legal advisers to seek clarification from the US Treasury for the reasons behind the decision.

Similar accusations were made against Britain’s largest Muslim charity seven years ago following a vicious media campaign, but Interpal was given a clean bill of health, when the Charity Commission declared Interpal was a “well run and committed organisation which carries out important work in a part of the world where there is great hardship and suffering.” (see The Muslim News issues No 83 & 86 (March 29, 1996 & June 28, 1996)).

“It is outrageous to be linked once again to political issues and terrorism. We are a British charity with no political links whatsoever and our funds are distributed purely on the basis of humanitarian need, no more, no less,” Hewitt insisted.
He said it was “sad but very serious consequence” for charities involved in the process of helping Palestinian victims of the Israeli occupation that they become the target of unsubstantiated allegations of involvement with terrorist organisations from the Israelis and their allies.
