Community in crisis!

A 17 year old sister in our neighbourhood just got diagnosed with Lymphoma.  It is a type of cancer, and from what her mom says, it sounds like it is quite widely spread (meaning a worse prognosis).  She is the youngest daughter of a widow, and they have no family support.  She and her mom and sisters could really use all of our Duaas, inshaAllah.  Please remember them?

So much is going on in my community, and I feel so helpless, sub7anAllah!  May Allah help all of us and protect us and those we love.

Looks like the sister is in need of some financial support. Please let us know where we can donate for her care inshaAllah.  Even if she won't recover it will be a strain on her mother so pls let us know.

[slm] Jannah!

Jazaki Allahu khairun for your concern.  I did IM you with bank details.

Should anyone else need them, please feel free to contact me via IM.

May Allah reward you all.  The sister started chemotherapy last week, and has been vomitting and everything since then.  She is very weak, so please keep her and her family in your Duaas?

[slm] Sis Shahida,

You know and have my e-mail addresses.  Please e-mail the info to me.

May Allah ease her pain and give strength to her Mother.

It would be nice to see people contribute to the good cause may Allah swt accept their
niyyah and contributions Ameen

For those who want to contribute from the west the options are

1)Wire transfer through a bank:
This is the safest and quickest way to contribute esp since South Africa does not have a
Western Union Branch it takes about 4 working days to reach South Africa the downside
being that say if one wants to contribute 100$ ALONE then about $40 goes towards bank fees
here and 25$ goes towards bank fees in South Africa and the effective money receieved  is
ONLY $35.
The solution would be groups of people get together for example one/two groups in North
America and Europe one person takes the responsiblity of collecting and wiriring the money
so that 65$ overhead gets split.

2) Personal checks : Good way but takes a long time to reach and once submitted in the
bank in South Africa it takes about 2-3 months to clear

For those people in North America and want to contribute but cannot form a group please
contact Sr Jannah.

Life is very short and no one knows when one will die ,so if some one has made a niyyah
then please act fast for who knows when death comes

Sure it takes 2-3 months to clear a personal check?? How about travelers checks or money orders? Cause $65 overhead is kind of ridiculous... or maybe we can send the checks to shahidah or someone and they can give the sisters the money now and then keep it when it clears?

Wowzers Anon...$65 is ridiculous.  I will find about about the other options Jannah proposed.  Khair inshaAllah.

Bismilla...do you know more about this?

Encahsing Traveller checks is difficult esp in third world countries where they ask for
proof of travel etc
International money orders take a long long time and one dosent know how safe they are
esp with a traunt postal  system it can get stolen mid way

say 10 people get together and  give 100 dollars each

10*$100=$1000 collected

$1000-65 (over head)=$935 dollars received=6545 SA Rand

65$/10=6.50 per person/over head

and more over it would be nice to have a community effort with some sort of coordination

I have been making enquiries with the local Bank's and they are talking about things called SWIFTS and ZAR Drafts.

A Brother in the Al Barakah Bank's foreign exchange div. (Durban) explained that the costs are not substantial at all.

You advise your local bank the detials of which Bank yu would like the money transfered to and Bank's on either side take a "small" ( 2% to 5%?) fee.

He was suppose to have sent in some sort of post about all of this....

Is there anyone else in the Banking sector that can shed some light please?

Although i work for a Bank, i am not in Banking.  I work in the Div that designs and sets up outlets for the Bank.  :P (sorry, i hope something in this post makes sense to the people who wish to donate.)

The thing is to enquire from your local banks wot the fees are and as Anon suggested, make a single deposit, preferably at the Bank that has the cheapest fee, Insha Allah.

I checked with my mom-they deduct R55 (approx $5) on our side.  I don't know where the other money is deducted ???  And with the fluctuating exchange rates, I dunno.  I think Anon has the best plan inshaAllah!

BTW Bismilla, sis, thanks so much!!! Me= ::) hehe :P Like medicine, banking is also very vast, so just cuz you work at the hospital, doesnt mean you're a doctor, just cuz you work for a bank, dont mean you work IN DA BANK, hehe, alhamdulillah.
