Moving to L.A.

I will *perhaps* need to move to L.A. for a year. I am not just nervous, I am scared.  ::)

Is the cost of living there high?

How much would a 'middle of the road' (?) one room apartment cost? What I mean is, i don't want to pay $1,000 dollars in just apartment rent. Over here a pretty decent apartment complex costs about $350.

Another thing, is it fairly safe and easy to commute in the city? I don't want to bring my car down there. But do you think I should? I mean i will have more freedom that way to go where I like.  ??? I am so confused. I have never ridden the bus before and wonder if it's safe.

Do you think it would be better instead to stay at a hotel. I would have a bed, a table, tv etc. How much do you think a farily good hotel cost? ps. I want to stay in a "good" area. you know what I mean?  :-[  I have been raised fearing "gheto" places........  ::)

Where do you currently live?  I'd like to know where I can get an apartment for that cheap a rent.

Houston, TX.

We even have apartments for 250, but they are very bad and not safe

Where in LA are you planning to move? LA city, LA county, or some nearby county? Since LA is a BIG county, and even people in nearby counties refer to their area as LA, you should be more specific.

In any case, you must have a car in california, except perhaps in San Francisco. Travel distances are usually large, so you must decide the amount of travel time you plan to spend every day. Traffic is "nasty" in LA, btw, not for the faint of heart.

If you are moving alone, its best to find a female muslim roommate. Best places for finding a muslim female roommate are near the big schools, like UCLA and USC. You can ask their respective MSAs for references. Incidentally, you can't get an apartment under $1000, unless you live in a "ghetto" area, whatever that means. And even that doesn't cost anywhere near $350.

Wow the cost of living there is high. I guess I have no choice but to pay 1000 dollars in rent. If I paid 12,000 down on a house here in Houston, my monthly payment would be 1000 here. I always heard people say that Texans have the cheapest rates for quality housing.

Over here, for that much money for an apartment, I'd be living in a very upscale part of town.

Oh by the way, I'd be living in the city of L. A.

That's not entirely true, I live in the LA area, and me and my husband got an apartment for 850 in a good area. It's near CSUN too, and in a new building which basically means it was built after the 94 earthquake.
But you do need to be careful of the area you get your apartment in. I've only been in LA (the city) a couple times, and I wouldn't want to live there...Why are you moving here? Is it for school? If you're going to USC or UCLA try to get an apartment near the campus, with a female muslim room mate. That would be best I think. Even if you're not attending college, I would think that would still be the best way to go.

I forgot....you also asked what the cost of 1 bedrooms go for. Now I don't live in the city, I live out in the valley, but, what me and my sister and also my husband have found is the general prices range from 750 - all the way past 1,000 and we're still talking 1 bedrooms...I know, that must be quite a shock from 350.  :o  :o  :o

Why are you moving here? Is it for school?

Internship for a full year with NBC

All right now, I can take my car down there. So what is a fairly decent place to live in, that is not too far from the city?
Roomate option is out of the question because I have my husband as my roomate.

I checked out hotel rates and a farily good one will cost around 850 + 1000 a month. That means if I stay at the hotel for a year then i won't have to buy a desk, a tv (to keep up with the news; internet does not have everything you know....), and of ourse a bed, a lamp, a study lamp.

I don't want to buy all that because I wont' be staying there for more than a year.

Bed, lamp, etc is cheap, eating out is expensive. Most hotels do not even allow a microwave inside the rooms, so you have to factor in the food cost as well.

You'd want to live near a masjid. Culver City, Granada Hills, Northridge (CSUN), San Gabriel are the closest cities (to Burbank) with nice masajid, not ghetto at all. I guess the travel time under ideal conditions would not be more than 30 minutes.

You have to have a car to get around in LA.  SuperFOB summed it up pretty well, can't really add to it.  I have been out to the valley once or twice and the traffic really sucks.  Its also about 90 miles away from where I live (and generally speaking Orange County is considered part of the LA area).  That should give you an idea of just how massive this area is    I think people live in the valley because its more affordable.

The internship sounds like a lot of fun, alhumdullilah they offered you an opportunity.

You do live pretty close to me, Mike, I didn't know anyone from the boards lived here in the Valley. I live in Granada Hills, near Devonshire and Hayenhurst, but am moving in with my husband this weekend, at Lassen and Zelzah, by CSUN. I bet he'd like to meet you, he loves to meet new people. Especially if they're muslim.

Missy,  I am doing a high school right near you on Zelzah and Superior.  It is right on the CSUN campus.  Jannah is right i am not muslim, but I love to meet new people also.  I doubt a report on me would create much interest, but you could report on my kids.  They are the cutest and most handsome boys on the Madina Board.

Panjul,  If you are looking for temp furniture, look at the recycler.  You do not even have to buy it you can go to recycler.com.  It is people selling used stuff,  kinda like Ebay except you don't bid you call people direct.

Missy, do you need help moving?  let me know.
