What to do when you're on your period?

I had a couple questions about what to do when you're on your period. I remember hearing at one of the ISNA lectures that it's good to always have wudu b/c Bilal always had wudu which is why the Prophet saw could hear his footsteps in Paradise ( i *think* that's how the story went, but please please someone correct me if i'm wrong).

So my question is, can you still make wudu on your period? Or does it not really make sense, since you're not clean to pray anyway? I also have been trying to make dhikr or make dua when it's prayer time and I can't pray and it makes me feel better to make wudu before I do that, but am I doing something wrong by doing that?

jazakallah khair :)

Dear sis :)  The story of Bilal (ra) and how the Prophet (saw) heard his footsteps in Jannah was because he used to offer 2 rakah after performing every wudu.

As for sisters making wudu when theyre on their monthly...the reason for performing ablution is for purification purposes when we ready ourselves for prayer, dhikr or acts of ibadah.  Seeing as a womans menstruation is seen as a somewhat "impure" state in that she can't pray or fast would make wudu a non-requisite and unnecessary.

Dhikr of the tongue and heart can be performed of course...for that the body can be w/o wudu.  Even outside of this time, it is not obligatory to have wudu, but desirable and recommended :)

wAllahu a'lam..pray this helped inshaAllah.

I agree with sister Nisa about the wudu. During that time I will do dhkir, du'a, or read Islamic books.

While wudu' is not required for dhikr, etc, it's also not "haraam" to do it. Allahu A'lim. If it helps, masha'Allah. Main point is to maintain the rememberance of Allah.

Some other suggestions (prob already given):
-try to utilize a non-mus-haf to maintain whatever parts of the Qur'aan you've already memorized.
-keep attending halaqas and classes on Islaam, particulary if they're not held in a musallah area.
-dhikr: morning and evening; or whatever other appointed times.
-read more books on Islaam that you've been putting off.
-i'm normally not big on sleep (we really need less than we realize), but sheeeesh, a girl can sleep during that time of month. Prob due to temporary anemia, loss of blood, etc. Intend to use that extra sleep as a means to gain strength for when you're "back on track."
-On the flip side, don't hibernate, since inactivity isn't a good thing, either. And eat well...but not "too" well :). Not a big fan of red meat, but sometimes it's a good idea to have when you're feeling sluggish during that time.
-you can still make du'aa and istighfaar, even during the last part of the night, when Allah calls on all those who have something to ask Him.
-etc etc.

As a sister once told me, be grateful Allah is giving you a "break" (from the timing and physical aspects of prayer). While it seems like we're off-kilter when we don't pray at the designated times, we still have lots of other types of 'ibaadah we can do, even though nothing takes the place of salaah.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,

this was a question asked to our imam after he gave an *amazing* talk on the spiritual dimensions of taharah.. he said that though performing wudu at this time will not have the usual physical effect [i.e, physically preparing you for salah], it will have the same spiritual effects.. it will remind you of the deeper types of purfication -- like purifying our limbs and senses from sin; and the deepest and more important type of taharah, purifying our hearts from anything and everything except Allah, azza wa jal.

So I would say.. go for it :)

wasalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah :-)
