Windows Messenger probs

I would appreciate any cures for this problem I keep having.  I have MSN Messenger 6 installed on my comp...which actually came pre-installed with a really ancient version 4.7 I think it is.

Anyways, the problem is this...I deselected Windows Messenger cuz I noticed it was in my Programs Menu, but after re-mastering my system, it keeps loading automatically when I log onto the net, invisibly, without me even knowing I'm logged into Messenger, and when I do sign in using Messenger version 6.0, a message pops us saying I have been signed out because I have signed in at a different location ???

I have tried uninstalling version 6 and upgrading the pre-installed version but to no avail....also it doesnt come up in the add/remove programs so I can't get rid of it that way.

If anything of what I said made sense to anyone, please help!!

JazakAllah khair in advance :)

There is an option which will turn off this behaviour.

1)  Open Messenger
2)  Open Tools ---> Options
3) Chose "Preferences" Tab in the options window.
4)  Uncheck the following
a) Run this program when Windows starts
b) Allow this program to run in the background

Check and see if it helps.

I tried what you suggested akhi...and both options are already unchecked!

Anything else I could try inshaAllah?

my solution is to bang the side of the computer.  If that doesn't work then turn it off and on at a rapid pace for 3 minutes.  If none of that works call it names.

I also have a question about this perky program!   ::)

So when I'm not logged into my MSN Messenger account, the main window is defaulted to be logged in with my email account!  Once you click on it, it'll sign in as me, without asking for a password.  It used to be, on the older versions, that you had to click on "Sign in here" and then it would ask you for your email address and password, and *then* sign you in.

So in a nutshell, how do I make it so that someone else using my computer cannot sign on to my MSN account?

And no, I aint got nothing to hide :P

Jazakum Allahu khairan.

When you launched add/remove program, did you try the option on that window with "Windows Component" written on it? The idea is that your MSN might be installed along the windows as a component and to remove it you should try that "Window Component" option in the add/remove program menu, it'll be listed there.

Hope this helps.

Go to Tools -> Option -> Accounts and delete your password from there AND Tools -> Option -> Privacy and select/enable the checkbox with "Always ask for Password...."  written on it. That'll be 150$, i accept payments through credit cards too.

Mike...lol as good as your solution sounds I think I'll pass  :P

Br Nomi...I have tried uninstalling the older version by going to windows components and unchecking the box next to Windows Messenger...but it still remains on my comp for some reason  ::)

Also...the program comes up on my Programs list and if I right click on it and hit delete, it says that it will only delete the shortcut and not the program..to delete the program it tells me to go to add/remove programs and delete it from there, only its not even listed  ???

The only way I can think of and that actually works, is to click on the program before I sign onto the net, and then cancel the sign in when I'm logged on.  Seems rather unnecessary.....there must be some kind of fix to this  :(

Any more suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Heh, MSN 6.0 will not upgrade 4.7, nor will it remove it. Uninstalling 4.7 only removes the usual listings and not much else. Its still there, creepy huh. Following some strange logic, MS have made this decision and you have to live with two of them. You can uninstall 6.0, I have never seen any good reason to install it anyways. Don't let it bother you too much as this is a minor problem and the next upgrade would fix it in all probability. And you can always have two accounts to login to.

Walikumassalam,

I read somewhere that you can download the MSN Messenger 6.0 installer and run that. You will get an option to 'Uninstall'. That should disable MSN Messenger 6.0

There's another way to do it too: If you are up to doing a root canal on your computer, you can hack the registry and give Micro$oft a taste of it's own medicine .. hehe:

Actually here's the 'official' way to do it:

Why they've made it so hard to do it I can only guess.
