Halloween: Innocent Fun or Mortal Danger?

By M. Murad

"O You who believe protect yourselves and your families from Fire whose fuel is men and stones."

Soon, the festival season will come, the Halloween and Christmas. Some Muslim parents naively or ignorantly dress their children in funny or weird outfits, and send them out to go door-to door, collecting candies in the evening of Halloween. And in return, the same parents give out candies to other children who roam the streets, house to house for that purpose. Those parents think that there is no harm in allowing their children to participate in such carnivals, and that they should not deprive their children of innocent fun.

They may change their minds once they know what is Halloween all about. The Encyclopedia Britannica says:

"Halloween is the Eve of All Saints Day. The souls of the dead, the Saxon and the Irish who innovated it believed, were supposed to revisit their homes on the 31st of October, and the autumnal festival acquired sinister significance with ghosts, witches, hobgoblins, black cats, fairies and demons of all kinds that are said to be roaming about."

The article in the Britannica goes on to state:

"It was time to placate the supernatural powers controlling the processes of nature. A common symbol of Halloween is a hollowed-out pumpkin carved in the appearance of a demonic face and with a lighted candle fixed inside. "

The following points may be deduced from the foregoing:

1) Halloween is a festival innovated by the pagans
2) It is based on paganistic and demonic beliefs
3) It is based on polytheistic beliefs that were not held even by the Arab pagans in the pre-Islamic era.

How could a Muslim who believes in Allah as his Rubb, and Muhammad, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, as His Messenger allow his children to participate in a festival innovated by the enemies of Allah, the Rubb of the world. Those enemies deny the existence of Allah and believe in the supernatural power instead. And they deny Allah's act of creation and believe instead, in the process of nature.

Those Muslims who participate or allow their children to participate in the infidels' festivals commit a grave sin that is tantamount to shirk in many cases. They should also realize that by allowing their children to participate in such festivals they expose them to a great danger; their children will grow up accustomed to sacrilegious festivals. A Muslim must never underestimate the negative effects of these festivals on the youth. Once children become accustomed to celebrating such festivals, it would be difficult for them to give them up, or to see anything wrong in participating in them. Participation in infidels' festivals leads to establishing intimate relationship with them, and consequently to friendship and love of the enemies of Allah.

Allah, the Supreme, and His Messenger, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, prohibit us from celebrating any holiday, festival, or carnival other than the two designated Islamic Eids, al Fitr and al Adha.

i am not a halloween fan, but i do not get the part of not wanting to establish friendships and love of people.  Does this mean thanksgiving is out too?

Nothing wrong with establishing friendships and love of people. The thing is why pick certain days that kind of have a wack history...

My sons use to feel so neglected as while they were growing up I would not allow them to particapate in Halloween. I see no good in that holiday. And I don't think it is innocent fun
to dress as devils, witches and the like  :(
and go to doors of people you do not know like a greedy begger.

I don't buy or give stuff out.
Because of the sicko's out in the world I make sure all the animals
are safe and locked in the night before and of and I lock the gate to my drive.

Thanksgiving? I think anytime is a great time to gather the family for a nice dinner and give thanks and praise to God.

Christmas? I like giving anytime of the year when it is put on my heart to do so and I do for my sons and their wives and my friends and people I come across who are in need....no special date needed.

I for one, am sooo tired of Holidays and the commericalism of them.
One never needs a specific date to give thanks and praise to God, show love and kindness to others, gather for dinner, give a gift or hand a candy bar to a child.

People tend to show their worse, rudest and most ignorant  sides during the holidays  :(  Bad traffic manors and being rude to those around them in stores  :(
A couple 4th of July's back my husband had to yell threw the trees at the neighbors for shooting fireworks right over our horse pasture. I thought for sure my stallion was going to run right threw the fences in fear   >:(

What am I going to do this halloween??  same as last, ignore the door bell. Firstly we don't keep sweets  in the house, hubby won't let me :'( and even if we did have them they wouldn't last long...  :-[. Also the kids around here are so abnoxious I am not about to be bullied into giving out sweets to them.

Halloween...'Whats' my plan....(put a "chin scratching smiley' here). My plan would probably go to the Masjid, since they usually have a program going on at halloween night with the intention of gettin our kids minds out of the Halloween Spirit.

Boy last time we had Halloween, our doorstep got egged! (i.e thown eggs at).  >:( . Who thought up this holiday anyway?

[slm] ;-) :)

That's so true, I think it's sad really. People spend so much money, the comercialism is awful, it's like, they take such a nice thing and ruin it, the stores and those people I mean. It would be so nice to just have a nice dinner with the entire family without having to buy a bunch of stuff for each other. We tried that last Christmas, but it didn't work out...Everyone misunderstood, and the information got turned around. It's going to be weird this year though...Since I'm not supossed to celebrate it anymore.

Halloween I think is sort of dumb. I mean, really come on.. spirits coming back for one night only? That's ridiculous... ::) But that's those crazy Irish for you...I'm glad it wasn't the Scotts.
Honestly though, me and my sister used to dress up. But not for a while now. This year, I get to work all night, go home and hopefully no one's still out at the ungodly hour when I get home, and I'll just go to sleep. That's my plan..

I love lindt.  Jannah,  if you ever come out west you need to go into a See's Store.  They are so the best.  Better than Godiva chocolates even.

I'm Irish too, actually, a nice mixture of a few differnt peoples you could say. Anyways, I meant it like a silly side comment, maybe it would've come across better as: But that's those crazy Irish for you... :P

When I read it, I thought, oh...I didn't really offend her did I????? Then I read the rest  :)

The church I used to go to has an alternative to Halloween, there's games and food, and people give candy. They just ask for no costumes of devils, ghouls, or witches and no scary stuff, nothing inappropriate either. I think they might call it the Autumn Festival or something like that.
