Hello.  I'm new to the boards and I'm exploring Islam, and was wondering if you could help me understand and find my way in my first new faith.  Any help would be appreciated.   ;D

Well, I guess I could give a small background of myself. . . I am 17, and a female (obviously  ;D) and I live in the US.  I work as a lifeguard at a hot springs pool and I am in my second semester of college.

I first became interested mildly in Islam when I read the books Shabanu and Haveli, which are about a young woman in Pakistan who leaves her nomadic parents to live in the city with her husband, and how she escapes after he dies.  I've had those books for several years, and recently I read Seraglio which is about a French girl who was kidnapped and given to the Turkish sultan to have in his harem, and how she eventually survives to be the mother of the sultan.  They're rooted deeply in Islam, and as I read Shabanu and Haveli again now focused more on the religious aspects and how things worked within the religion, I decided that I'd like to learn more about it.  I went 2 libraries and got several books, but I'm wondering where it is that you think it's best I start.

Any sort of suggestion or something you think is important for me to know, and how to practice on my own, please let me know.  Survival tips, if you will.   ;)

Thank you  :-)

I'm too idiosyncratic (or maybe just too tired - it's 1am here) to give something so organised as a list of tips, so will leave that to my wiser Madinites ;D

I do, however, welcome you most warmly to the board. You'll have time to discover how incredibly blessed you are to have found it inshallah :)

Also offering hugs and a bebzi  []

Wow :) I must say i am impressed that those novels actually guided someone..not that i've read them, but from what i understand of these fantasy tales about harems and elopers is that they tend to have little to do with Islam and much to do with the West's infatuation with the mystique of all that is the orient and the east.
so Mashaallah:) cool:)
First things first, put those books aside and let's get on the real fun reading for you my sis :)
a) Must have..Copy of the Quran (Translation of A. Yusuf Ali is pretty good)
b) What Islam is All About or "Idiot's Guide to Islam" by Yahya Emerick. (both are really good).
c) Islam in focus (By ??? cant remember sorry :( )

That's a good starter set i guess, others can add Inshaallah.
ummm..i know a really awesome guy in our community who can send you a copy of the Quran and some good readings if you want you can IM your address  ( I am not a stalker I promise :) ask Ummwafi and Jannah to testify   ;)  )
but if you don't feel comfy it's aight. Also you can find a local Islamic Center and check out the scene in ya hood Inshaallah:)
If you have any q's feel free to get in touch:)

Hey - thanks for writing back!

One of the things that I'm going to ask the board in general are the words that you're using - um. . . .my vocabulary isn't as "up" as it should be.  Inshallah is "god willing" isn't it?  And other than that I don't really remember.  One thing I liked about the books is how they used phrases like "God Willing" or they were praising Allah in the middle of conversations, or saying "May Peace be with him" when talking about someone who had passed. . . and how do they know the appropriate time to say them?

But those two books, Shabanu and Haveli  were surprisingly enlightening more than Seraglio.  And the other two were more focused on how Shabanu (the girl) relied on Allah to get her through and how she dealt with leaving her family and nomadic life to live with her husband, Rahim, who was a tribal religious leader.  It was really good and I suggest that you read it if you could.

Well, I thought I'd make a list of books so I could see if they were duds or not.

Hah - well, I've got Islam for Dummies - so hopefully that will be enlightening.

Also - I DO have Islam in Focus - it's by Hammudah Abdalati.

Islam; A short history by Karen Armstrong

Islam & World Peace: Explanations of a Sufi by M.R. Bawa Muhaiyaddeen - this one I'm a little skeptical about - I think that it might be a little dry

And I also have the Qur'an, translated by Dr.s Muhammed Taqi-ud-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan.

And since I'm feeling a little more comfortable on the boards, maybe I'll be a little more open about myself. . .

I was born in the USA and my dad is from Mexico and my mom's from here - so I'm mexican-american.  Since my parents have 2 different religions, they never took us to church, and never taught us to believe in God, so I have gotten along so far without Him.  That step is the biggest step that I think I'm going to have to take in gaining any religion.

heh - so, that's the "open" part of me.  And what do the Arabic scripts on the button bar mean?

Thanks!

:-) - me
