Salaams,

Depends on mem type, processor, and motherboard.

If its a new board then its got to work with the memory for example DDR, also who is the memory buy is it cheap and cheerful from Ebuyer.com or is it from crucial?. As for mumboard what speed does it run at, are you  a board clocker if so have you got the right fan and correct speeds for your processor?. If not welcome to the blue screen of death.  As for sound drivers many boards have now got them intergrated, have you got the latest drivers from their dedicated site or are you using the default ones detected by plag and pray?.

I know some guys at work run linux on Pentiums and IPAQ!s, I'm running Linux and Win 2000 on a Pentium 233, 10 gig hard disk and 98 megs of ram and I have no problems. Ok slow as anything but works fine. My Dell PDA had more processing power than my machine...

You may find the components you bought on Ebuyer or for reviews check out Toms Hardware and see what others say, useful to check out the research before you buy anything.

If you have everything in order you can run any OS and it'll work fine. If you want simplicity its XP if you want control over an OS and decide what it loads and what not its got to be Linux.

Assalam aleikum,

Did you get a new computer or just a new HD? Assuming the latter, it's just possible that the HD had bad sectors to begin with (running scandisk type utility will probably reveal if there are any bad sectors). This happened to my friend who ordered a new HD from Dell.

As for the best OS, I really think that depends on what application you are going to run on it. If it's just for average home use, then I think WinXP or Win2000 is probably best. If you need it for development, then probably some flavor of linux is best. For graphics, Mac's OS X is probably best (although you'd have to buy a Mac for that :)

I have a (relatively) slow computer (PII Celeron 466 MHz) and I've installed Win2K and SuSE Linux on it.

Windows XP Professional is the best, very stable and a lot of cool stuff.  Windows 2000 is also very stable.
