I need some help from some crafty people... What would be the coolest way to make some Ramadan lanterns with kids? I'd like to try it as a project with the littlest class i have 5-7 year old girls...

Jannah, there is one way I know of and easy but first I need to know exactly what you mean by latern? Would they be putting a candle in it?

There is a method where you blow up a baloon and cover it with warm melted (not hot) wax, you then put tissure paper one that and more warm melted wax on as a third layer let it dry, pop the balloon and
WALA..........a beautiful bowl like dish that reflects the like when you put a small candle holder with candle inside.

You can do half a balloon to make to make a bowl shape, or cover it like 2/3   or 3/4   or 4/5 th's depending on how deep it is.

Grapevine wreath materal at a wally world or craft shop makes a wonderful circular bottom for the bowl shaped ones.

Between the tissue paper and last coat of wax you can even put leaves, pine needle, color half moons and cut them out and put inbetween layers.
If this sounds like an idea you like let me know and I'll post more specific instructions.

Salam,

I'm awful at describing and giving instructions..but I'll give it a go..

What you can do is use juice or milk cartons. Ask the kids to bring them if they have any at home.

First cut  out  windows on all four sides. You would have to do the cutting. It would probably be easier to do with an exacto knife than scissors.

Paint the frame or if paint is too messy what you can do is cut pieces of coloured tissue paper and glue it on the frame.

To cover the windows you can use coloured tissue paper or cellophane.
The kids can then  decorate it which ever way they like using stickers or whatever.

Hope that was clear enough.

Here's a site I found with pretty lanterns.

Goodness jannah I did raise 2 kids !!!!!!
Warm like the temp af parafin wax you dip your hands in for moiturizing therapy not hot, hot wax would melt or pop the balloon and burn kids, I know better than that  ;)

well for this age group, if you are not going to put candles in then the best is to make paper lanterns start with A4 ones get the kids to decorate with patterns a sheet of A4 paper all over. Fold the paper in half long wise so u end up with a long strip (not A5 sized paper) pattern side out. next cut from the folded side down in strips, leaving abt 3 cm border at the bottom. open up the paper and make a cylinder and fasten with sticky tape or glue, you will find that where the paper was folded it bends outwards.. u can then stick a pice of paper on top to make a handle. Hope this makes sense..... :-* :-* :-*

[slm] All

Back home in Sri Lanka there is a holiday called Vesak........And lo and behold what they do for the holiday is make colorful lanterns and hang it up! :)...

Its actually a bhuddist holiday of light. The lanterns are usually made from thin bamboo shoots, but can be replaced with other material such as plastic. A frame is made (Usually in a 3d hexagonal-like shape) and covered with tissue paper. The top panel is not covered....Well u get the idea.

Hope this helps... [slm]

well I made a lovely lantern type thingy while visiting a Muslim sister here once.
What we did was use some silver covered cardboard. You cut it into a long strip and then cut out four windows out of it. We used stencils to cut out mosque type shapes.. but for kids it can be circles or squares.
Then we did some silk painting. We cut silk into patches big enough to cover the windows and used silk paints. Oh and before we used the silk paints we did some calligraphy - Allah and Allahu Akhbar etc - with a black paint in a tube thing.
then when the silk dried we stuck the patches over the four windows and then folded the strip so it had four sides - each with a window - and stuck the two ends together.

So yeah .. it's similar to the milk carton idea. For younger kids I'd go with milk cartons and tissue paper.

What is VERY important is when you put the little candle inside, the candle has to be in a glass or jar or something because the silk/tissue paper is highly flammable.

okay that's it....

have fun!!!

.... the aluminium cooldrink cans can also be used.  They can quiet easily be cut into any shape and have holes indented in them through which the light of the candles can shine.

They can also be suspended, it's not flammable and keeps the candle safely inside.

A bit of sea sand can be place inside to keep longer candles from falling askew.

For this age group Merimenda's idea works well. Also instead of milk cartons you can get those tall plastic containers that take out uses for soup, olives, cut fruit...etc.

I would cut small holes before the class and just let them decorate them with glitter, paint,  cut tissue paper.

I would buy glow in the dark bracelets at the dollar store 6/$1 and put them inside at the end of class and turn off the lights.

If you use the plastic conatiners then they can easily remove the lid to put another one in later.

Since alot of them are learning to tie their shoes. Get a buch of sting and punch holes and see if they can put the handle on themselves... ;)
