Can someone tell me what this is 'he has to declare the Kalimah first' Is Kalimah the same as Shahadah or is it something different? I read this site and kind of took the wind out of my sails (sort of speaking) I am still going to observe Ramadan, read the Quran, study, fast and all. My heart is sincere, guess it will be up to the Almighty to see inside my heart and decide if he will accept me and my intentions. What is Kalimah? Sorry to intrude on your post Kathy, was reading it and the reply and had questions. ;) |

Salaam, [quote]Can someone tell me what this is 'he has to declare the Kalimah first' Is Kalimah the same as Shahadah or is it something different? I read this site and kind of took the wind out of my sails (sort of speaking) I am still going to observe Ramadan, read the Quran, study, fast and all. Sorry to intrude on your post Kathy, was reading it and the reply and had questions. [/quote] Azizah, Kalimah is the same as Shahadah. As far as "acceptance" is concerned, that's for sure that it won't be accepted from Non-Muslims, since you have to become Muslim first by declaring shahadah (i-e believe in Oneness of Allah and believe that Muhammad is His last messenger). Shahadah is the foundation that has to be laid before you come to obligatory acts, perform them and be hopeful that they be accepted by your Lord and you be rewarded for that. To Allah, the *most* important thing is believing in His Oneness, and then anything comes later, it can't be other way around. If u were to build a building, u have to have pillars for it to support it, that pillar here is the shahadah, and the building itself is the rest of the good deeds that u may perform all ur life. If the pillar is not there, do not hope for the structure to last long, it'll collapse soon. However, one may never know how he/she may be guided. Maybe, Allah has written guidance for u through these fasts in Ramadan, so I would recommend u do as u planned, but ask God sincerely to show u the right path. Allahu A'lam (Allah knows Best). Wassalam. |

[slm] I agree w/ BOI that you should go ahead as planned w/ fasting this Ramdhan. I wanted to tell you of a story I recently heard: A man once came to the Prophet (SAW) and told him that during the period of ignorance in pre-islamic times when female infanticide was rampant, he used to save baby girls from being buried alive by bargaining with the parent and giving them two camels in return for sparing the infant's life. In this way, he had saved 360 (if I recall correctly) girls from dying. The man then asked the Prophet since he was a non-muslim at that time, whether he would be rewarded for these deeds by Allah (swt). The Prophet replied that he had already been rewarded by being blessed with Islam. The point of the story being that being persistent in doing good deeds can be a source of guidance (hidaya). |

[slm] [quote]What's the conflicting advice u got for prayers? [/quote] Some tell me at puberty, but I have a recollection, and the mind is slipping... that at 7 they begin and then at 10 you beat them if they don't... |

[slm] Sis Kathy, You are right! They should start at 7 and 10 you beat them if they don't. Without sounding like a boasting/over proud mother, my sons started both Salat and Ramadhan at age 7. Now, fasting is easy for them and they both complete the whole month, even fasting in school. The earlier they start, the better for them (kids). [wlm] Halima |

[slm] I am most concerned about Fajr prayers... what advice to you have, to get them up at 4 in the morning on school days? ( Yes I know not now, but later on in the year) |

In my case, I wake them up at 5:00 a.m. They take a shower, brush their teeth and pray the Fajr Salat at 5:30 a.m. and then one leaves for school at 6:00 a.m. while the other leave 7:00 a.m. as per their school bus pick-ups. On Saturdays and Sunday, they attend Madaras full time but still pray the Fajr Salat, go back to sleep and wake up again at 7:30 a.m. Madarasa starts at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 4:p.m. with break and lunch in between. I don't know if I have responded to your query or if I am completely off the mark. Halima |

AA Azizah, I certainly recommend that you fast, it may Inshallah be the final stepping stone to your shahdah. I know of one brother who beame muslim, and one of the first steps he took before becoming muslim was to try to fast three days every month, which is an extra fast observed by the Prophet (SAW) outside Ramadhan. |

[slm] sister kathy yes fasting starts at the age of puberty .that is correct but is good if they are trained earlier well that part of biting after 10 is for the SALAH They are supposed to be trained after seven and are forced to pray after the age of 10. but for the fasting even the age of 10 is not counted sinful for not fasting [wlm] |
