A Q on women's qualities in Quran?

[slm]  :)

A random thought just *struck* me. Wondering if anyone has any clue-

In the qualities mentioned abt believing women in Quran (say in Sura Tahreem), i hardly found any trait that speaks of her activism in social life: wher it glorifies her role as leadership, even for women themselves.

The modern image of Muslim women is that of a dynamic personality who has a strong say in the shaping of the community. She is an active member of the masjid and volunteers for seminars, which is equally appreciable.

Even where believing men and women's qualities are mentioned *together*,

Verily, men and women who submit;
And men and women who believe;
And men and women who are patient;
And men and women who are truthful;
And men and women who are humble before God;
And men and women who give in charity;
And men and women who fast;
And men and women who guard their chastity;
And men and women who remember God much –
To them God has promised forgiveness and a great reward."

(Surah Al-Ahzab, Verse 35)

... it does not enumerate the social role!

Am I missing something?  ???

[wlm] Bro Jaihoon

The Qur'an doesn't very much go into details and specifics on a lot of issues and topics.  However, we have our Hadiths and history for the elaboration.  For the "social and dynamic" aspects of women, we have so many examples. 'Aishah ra, Fatimah ra, Rumaysa ra, UmmSalamah ra and the list goes on...

Don't sweat bro cos after all, the Qur'an didn't precisely tell us HOW to do the solah wot ?

Wassalam.

There doesn't seem to be any  information about the womans 'specific' social role but  hadiths and surahs can be interpreted in the context of the societies in which we all live in now.

This site was pretty informative on Ideals and role models for women in Qur'an, Hadith and Sirah.

kuntum khaira ummatin uxrajat lin-nas -- ta'murruna bil ma'rufi wa tanhauna annil munkar wa tuminuna billah....(3:110)

You are the best of people  drawn out of mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah.

this seems to cover all the bases because enjoining the good and forbidding the wrong encompasses all form of islamic activism.

allahu alim....

i just wanted to suggest a book called "Women Companions of the Holy Prophet Muhammed SAW" wherein the lives of the wives, daughters and other female companions are decribed.

There are very good stories about their active roles in society in this book.  I don't have the book with me at work, i'll post the author's name tomorrow Insha Allah.

[font=comic SANS ms][color=green]Update 04.11.2003 : [slm]

The name of the book is Women Companions of the Holy Prophet (  [saw] ) and their Sacred Lives - written by Maulana Saeed Ahmed Ansari, Moulana Abdussalam Nadvi and Syed Suleman Nadvi.

Another one i just acquired this weekend is The Sahabiyat : Role Models for Todays Women - by Maulana Abdus Salam Nadwi

The first book is more or less a biography on the lives of all the Prophet  [saw] wives and daughters, touching on their social responsibilities and aspects.

The second book is specifically targetted at social resposiblities and characters of the women and includes among other things are chapters on :-

Social relationships and dealings
Religious Services rendered
Moral contribution
Intellectual contribution etc.

I hope these help Insha Allah. [/color][/font]
