[slm] Alhamdullilah, it's soo good to be back :)!! i missed everyone.. just been busy with school, teaching, MSA , family sigh sigh sigh :) alhamdullilah... I need some suggestions from you all :).. i'll be doing a presentation on Islam and Culture with another MSA bro in a week.. And Alhamdullilah our Imam will also be on the panel.. so phewwww But the organizers want us to relate our cultural (desi) things that contradict with Islam.. So we are obviously thinking of the hot topics in the media ex: honor killing, opression of women etc.. but running a blank of more cultural stuff.. any suggestions, website links etc etc jazakAllah khair ayeshaZ |

| [slm] Just some ideas of what ppl confuse with culture and Islam, (but i'm not sure if they were wat u were looking for): -forced marriages -female circumcision -believing that Islam is jus about one culture eg pakistani, arab -marrying ppl from the same caste, ethnic background. -that we all eat curries :D hope that might help inshaAllah [wlm] |

| [slm] Who is this presentation for? If it is for Muslims.. I say it is a good idea. If it is for non- Muslims... I think it is a terrible idea. I wonder what the audiance will be thinking as they leave... will it be about Allah swt and there only being one God and Muhammad [saw] was His messenger? Will they be thinking of prayer and charity? ...or will the front most thought on their minds be... the barbaric customs of a Muslim people....? Even tho you are going to dispell these ideas being of Islam... the average American will not be able to seperate the two...especially after the field day the media has had in the last two years. |

The presentation is for primarily non-muslims for one of local MSA's Islamic Awareness Month.. wow subhan'Allah u really think it's a terrible idea.. i actually didn't think too deeply about it.. I always thought and my limited experience with daw'ah work is how non-muslims have primarily been exposed to "cultural practices" rather than islam.. Just last saturday we had an open house in our local masjid.. and it amazes me year after year how the same questions with a different spin are asked.. for ex: why do muslim women walk behind men? My mom told me not to attend this open house cuz you might put a spell on me or something? sigh.. I've always been very frustrated when i hear non-muslims colleagues of mine talk about "Muslim men" who have asked them out etc etc.. One in particular dated a Muslim guy and was utterly disgusted by the "oppression" she had to go through etc... And majority of these scenarios are most definitely reflection of the individual and not their culture.. Even tho you are going to dispell these ideas being of Islam... the average American will not be able to seperate the two...especially after the field day the media has had in the last two years subhan'Allah, i feel unless and untill we try how in the world will we change people's perception about Islam..
