if you can't fast?

[slm],

This weekend me and my husband are going to fast, namely to see if  I even can. I'm hypoglycemic, and I've gotten really really sick in the past when I didn't eat for a while. Hopefully, I'll be able to, but if because of that the fasting makes me sick, is there other things I can do? We're going to try on Saturday, and if I can, again on Sunday. I'll post again about how it goes.

Please be very very careful, I know you want to do this and all, but be careful ok? If you do this make sure hubby is with you all the time incase you get dizzy or light headed, don't drive yourself around, and you may want to even consider consulting a doctor first.

Depending upon where you live most places are light 7 am ish to 6 pm ish, that is almost 11 hours.
Is there anything Islamically where you can avoid food and other stuff but maybe have a liquid/fluid with nutrients?

Missy if you have a medical condition where fasting is detrimental to you, you are excused from fasting. I'd suggest you ask your doctor about it a little more in detail and tell him/her what fasting means and what you usually eat how long it takes etc... and then after he tells u the effects etc, maybe ask your imam if you come under the excused category and what you may have to do instead.... like feed people, give an amount in expiation, etc... i think it's better if you don't just play russian roulette when u know you have medical problems...and instead go about it properly... and Allah knows best.

Missy, if you don't mind me asking, what exactly happens to you?   :)  Do you feel dizzy; do u faint?  Reason I am asking is b/c I too get hypoglycemic at times.  When I was younger, I've actually passed out at a wedding b/c I got dinner really late and hadn't eaten the whole day.  Ever since then my mom was really paranoid and wouldn't let me fast when I would go to school.  But alhamdullilah as I grew older, I sorta figured out the problem, and now can fast, but still rarely I do get a jittery feeling like I may pass out if I haven't eaten for a while, and in that case I immediately drink some juice (alhamdullilah this hasnt happened in Ramadan yet).  From what I've learned not only from personal experience but also through coursework, is for suhoor try to eat complex carbs (like whole wheat bread, etc) and then a protein as well (ie egg) with some fat such as the oil it's fried in, or margarine, instead of just refined carbs like cereal/milk.  The body takes a longer time to "munch" on and break down  the protein and fat.  Carbs are the immediate source of fuel for the body, and then it turns to stored glucose or glycogen, so make sure those reserves are up (that's just done by eating a balanced diet).   At iftar when u break your fast with a date, that's immediate glucose for relief; if during the day you feel dizzy or faint or whatnot, you know ur limits, and immediately drink some juice.  Just some recs...

HOWEVER, since Im not sure how hypoglycemic you are, and since I am not a doctor (just a dietitian) ask your doctor FOR SURE what to do, as sis Jannah rec.

Good luck!!

Wassalam

if a doctor  gives  the advice of not  fasting   as a dangerous factor  that  is  acceptable excuse  , and  you can  do  that  after  the  ramadan  is over . if again  you cant still fast  you  can    feed ten  poor  instead of  fasting .
