Proofs of Islam: the prophet and the quran

[slm]

this is a thread about proofs of the prophethood of Muhammad  [saw] and the divine nature of the quran.  there are lots of things which you like think of but then forget, so i thought actually writing down a list might be useful

(1) [prophet] Died with only a trunk of clothes while ruling the begining of a vast empire.

(2) [prophet] Stood during long parts of the night in optional prayer (tahajjud).  This prayer was very hard and not many muslims prayed it.  Try standing for 1/3 of the night every night in solemn prayer while the whole house was asleep.  Only the outrageously devout, ascetic and sincere could muster something like that.

(3) [prophet] In reply to Musaylamah (the false prophet) who wrote to Muhammad [saw] saying "half the earth is mine, and half yours" the prophet said: "To Musaylamah the liar...the earth belongs to the righteous..." thus forgoing any personal claim to wealth or land.

(4) [prophet] Proof of sanity: was scared that he became possessed or insane when Jibrail revealed the first surah to him and told him of his prophethood.  An imposter would never have been so conscienciously doubting and petrified, and would have claimed prophethood with much gusto and confidence.

(5) [prophet] He was as Ayesha[ra] said a "walking quran." Meaning he implemented its teachings to the T.

(6) [prophet] His companions later proved themselves to be men and women of outstanding honesty and sincerity and intelligence.

(7) [prophet] His worst enemies became his most fervent supporters.  Recall Khalid ibn Walid who slaughtered the muslims at Uhud.  He was a staunch enemy.  Yet later he would fawn at the very sight of the Prophet and do such things as fight for a lock of the prophet's hair after the prophet had his hair cut.

( 8 ) [prophet] Unimaginable spirituality.  Imagine the following

[i] And when he assumed the ruku (bowing position) he would say: "Oh my Lord, for you I have bowed down, and in you have I placed my faith, and to you have I committed myself.  My ears, my eyes, my marrow, my bones, my sinews have humbled themselves before you."  When he raised his head from the ruku position he would say, " May Allah listen to those who praise him.  Our lord, may your praises fill the heavens and the earth and fill everything in between and fill whatever remains to be filled after that."  When he assumed the sajdah (bowing on the ground) position he would say, " Our lord, for you have I bowed down, and in you have I placed my faith, and to you have I committed myself.  My face lies prostrated before the One who created it, fashioned it, and opened within it its sense of hearing and sight.  Blessed be Allah, the best of creators." (narrated by Muslim) [/i]

And try to appreciate another one of his typical prayers:

[i] Our lord, by your knowledge of the unseen and your power over the creation grant me life so long as you know life to be good for me and grant me death with you know death to be good for me.  Our lord, I ask you for the fear of you in public and in private, and i ask you for the (ability to speak) the word of truth in tranquility and in anger, and i ask you for frugality in wealth and in poverty, and i ask you for happiness which is never ending, and I ask you for pleasure which is never ending, and i ask you for contentment with your decisions, and i ask you for the finer life after death, and i ask you the pleasure of looking upon your face and meeting you without ever undergoing great suffering and without ever being subjected to misleading temptation." [/i]

Is it possible for a man so spiritually aware, so profoundly touched to be a liar?

(9) [prophet] He was known before islam to be exceedingly trustworthy.  He was even nicknamed "al-amin"  -- the trustworthy.

(10) [prophet] He remained married and faithful to a single woman, and a woman who was older for 25 years -- until her death.  He possessed no mistresses or other wives -- and this was in a time when polygamy was rife, practiced by all, and mistresses and concubines were the the norm rather than the exception.   After she died, he did not seek out the beautiful and eligible -- he married to consolidate islam and hence ended up marrying a very uneven set of women -- widows (umm salamah, etc), daughters of important companions (ayesha, hafsah) , daughters of his enemies (umm habibah?  daughter of abu sufyan, Juwayriah (spelling?)), etc) and daughters/followers of his allies (egyptian copt).

Much more later...
