Your pitfalls

Just curious. What are your pitfalls Islamically and how are you dealing with them?

Patience is one of my issues.  I can be very impatient at times so I try calm myself, make du'a and read Quran & Ahadith where allah discusses the virtues of patience.

I'm somewhat materialistic.  :-[ This is something I'm really working on. I like to shop! I'm still trying to come up with methods and strategies to purge myself of this habit. So far I've given to charity things that I don't wear and I won't buy something unless I'm sure I will wear it.  That started the process. Any suggestions?

Your Shipwreck
Author Uknown

"The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for Allah to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements and to store his few possessions.

But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his litple hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky.  The worst had happened; everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger.

"Allah, how could you do this to me!" he cried.

Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him.

"How did you  know I was here?" asked the weary man of his rescuers.

"We saw your smoke signal," they replied.

It is easy to get discouraged when things are going badly. But we shouldn't lose heart, because Allah is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering.

Remember, next time your little hut is burning to the ground, it just may be a smoke signal that summons The Grace of Allah.

[Qur'an 20:131]
Nor strain thine eyes in longing for the things We have given for enjoyment to parties of them, the splendour of the life of this world, through which We test them: but the provision of thy Lord is better and more enduring.

ASsalamu Alaikum

There is also these ahadeeth since you mention you are materialistic. Maybe you want to read commentaries on them . These are aHadith Qudsi.

Narrated Abu Huraira that Allah's Messenger (pbuh) said:

Spend, O son of Adam! and I shall spend on you.

(This Hadith is sound and related by Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Of course it is spending for the sake of Allah(swt), such as in this hadith:

Narrated 'Ubada bin As-Samit: I heard Allah's Messenger (pbuh) quoting his Lord , Who said: My love is established for those who love one another for My sake; and My love is established for those who spend money for My sake; and My love is established for those who visit one another for My sake. (In fact) those who love one another for the sake of Allah will be at pulpits of light in the shade of Allah's Throne on a day when there is no shade but His shade.

(This Hadith is sound through all its channels and related in Musnad of Ahmad.)
