Assalaamu alaykum, Does anyone have suggestions as to where an American Muslim can study Islam, particulary for a PhD in Islamic studies or Shari'ah or even Arabic? I'm considering both universities overseas (first choice, although I'm a sister and this will require some logistical planning) and western universities. Insha'Allah, I'd like to eventually teach Islamic studies in a university setting in the West (highly needed, even now, for Muslims to teach Islam in American schools, since too many professors are Orientalists). Any suggestions would be appreciated. JazakAllahu khair |

Someone posted this in the Madina Minaret forum and it sounded promising: http://www.shariahprogram.ca/ Here's a link to the thread: http://www.jannah.org/cgi-bin/madina/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1066540962 |

[slm] I have been told McGill (Montreal, Canada) has a good program, Masters AND PhD. I know a brother (who's like 70) who completed his Masters in Islamic Economics from there. He's a big advertiser for their program (and he definitely has my respect). But don't take my word for it. University of Khartoum, Sudan, is awesome, too. But I doubt you'd head there, logically speaking. Good luck to you, sister...it sounds like an amazing plan, mashaAllah. Wasalaam. |

[slm] American Open University has a couple of programs and a PHD program. http://www.open-university.edu/ Alhumdullilah one of the instructors there, brother Muhammad Al-Shareef, a scholar, is also a regular member of this board and maybe can insha'Allah answer some questions. Also the imaam of the masjid near my house (Sheikh Yassir Fazaqa) is an instructor at American Open University, and in my opinion the best speaker I have ever heard, he as a PHD in psychology. |
