NATIONAL MARCH ON WASHINGTON AND SAN FRANCISCO, SATURDAY OCTOBER 25

In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful

These are historic times. Afghanistan and Iraq are under occupation. The
status of civil liberties in America today is reminiscent of the McCarthy
era. Yet, in the past two years, the world has witnessed the rise of a new
super power, as the New York Times calls it, that of public opinion, that
of the people. April 20, October 26, January 18, February 15, March 22 and
April 12. These were days when millions of people worldwide said NO TO
INJUSTICE, NO TO WAR!

The occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan continue. Palestinians still bear
the brunt of Israeli brutality. Young American soldiers are dieing daily in
Iraq. The economy worsens, as needed funds are diverted to the occupation
instead of jobs, healthcare and education. The civil liberties of Muslims,
Arabs and South Asians deteriorate by the day with the arrests and
harassment of activists and the detention of thousands.

On October 25, 2003, the second anniversary of the signing of the PATRIOT
ACT, the International ANSWER coalition and United for Peace and Justice,
the two largest anti-war coalitions in the USA, will co-sponsor two marches
on Washington and San Francisco, to call for the end of the occupation of
Iraq, bring the troops home, money for jobs, health care and education and
no to the PATRIOT ACT.

Muslim students have a pivotal role to play in the anti-war movement and
the reemerging civil rights movement. It is our people, our dignity, our
time.

“Oh you who believe, stand for justice” Qur’an

Will you stand up?

Assalamu 'alaikum,

I don't get it? Why isn't Texas there? We have a huge Muslim community here, why aren't they participating, when u have California from West, and Louisiana from South Central?

Salaams,

Don't take my words personal board members but what is this march going to succeed?. Seriously, I think as my opinion, we should forget all these marches, as too much time is spent focusing on them and little if anything is realised, because many feel simply by marching they have cleansed their conscious. I bet yah it won't even get reported on TV or any of the main news channels, as many of them have a strong policy of supporting the current governments. Millions of people marched around the globe and what did it achieve? Iraq was still bombed.

And I may be the odd ball on this board or within my Muslim circle of family and friends but I for one do not want the US and UK troops to be brought back home from Iraq. Why? because for a start the country is in turmoil, if the troops are withdrawn that will create a vacuum so large that crime will spiral out of order. Heck where is the Muslim army when you need em?.  The sad thing is as Muslims we can't even lend a hand to our brothers/sisters because we are too afraid, weak, in other words cowards. The message goes to each and every single one of us and you know its the truth. The safest, easiest and ONLY action we resort to are marches, easing the burden on our hearts and minds.

However, if all these people marched to Baghdad, Palestine, Afghanistan and became human shields, volunteers, and began to build the country the world would be very different.
Anyway just me thoughts....

Salaams

Bro Hanif Mashaallah you summarized my thoughts exactly!  But what's an "activitist" to do?!
Going to those places is a remote option for me personally, due to my own cowardice, lack of finance, lack of means...all of which boils down to my own attachment to my little constructed world of fallacies ::)
So, since it seems like a majority of the Muslims that are *stuck* in the west, for a variety of good and not so good reasons...what else is there to do?
In my experience, none of the stuff we do actually works..."interfaith" talks have been no more than empty jargon, because none of those professed believers are standing up for justice, democratic alliances are shot, writing to papers (if you get published, you get a little minute corner in the end somewhere, that no one gets to read)....
I mean literally you can go down the list and cross out all the options that are not leading us anywhere. So what is a sane person, wanting to hold on to the last threads of sanity to do?

I am grappling with that one...I am reading some Al Farabi works, a philosopher that lived in the first century after Hijra...He was so frustrated trying to "change" the "corruption" of the system *then*, that he started to spend long periods of time in isolation simply invoking Allah and being connected to nature, etc. I bet he would have a heart attack were he to live in this complex world of illusionary reality ::)

I am beginning to realize the great sages of all time, who invariably saw the ineffectuality of trying to change the "system" from within..actually might have a point ...
