music in Islam

assalamu alaikum brothers and sisters

First of all I would like to thank everyone for their amazing response and overwhelming support.  The love and strength of the Ummah continues to astound me.  I can't believe I've led by whole life ignorant to the truth and beauty that is Islam.  I truly feel like a have a fresh start on life.

Anyway... this is a question in regards to music.  I've always been a big fan of all types of music.  Unfortunately,I can't even turn on the radio (here in America) without being bombarded with filth.  I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about.  However, when I was considering my conversion, there were two songs about Islam that I heard on the radio. i didn't catch the name of the song or artist.

The first was by a female artist (Western I presume) who was singing about Islam has brought me peace etc.  I heard this on NPR's World Cafe.  It kind of had a folksy, rock type sound.  If I remember right, I think it was just her and her guitar ( could be wrong about that).

The second song I actually heard on a local radio station.  It was an anti-war rap song and I remember a line that went something like this:  In iraq we're dropping bombs. . . and peace to Islam.

Does anyone have a clue who these artists might be?  I'd really like to know.  Also, can anyone recommend any good music for us Muslim's?  I'm open to many forms.  It's my understanding that music is allowed in Islam.  Is there anything to avoid (besides the obvious drugs, sex, shirk etc.)  I've heard that Allah's name should not be put to music.

Can't wait for Jummah prayers :-* :-* :-*

Much love
Allahu Akbar

Dear sis....I'm afraid I can't help you out with the names of the artists you mentioned....however I can recommend a brilliant site where you can listen to Islamic songs, also called nasheeds:

You may or may not have heard of the artist Yusuf Islam...formerly known to many as Cat Stevens.  After his reversion to Islam almost 20 years ago now alhamdulillah, he concentrated on producing material which not only served as a reminder to Muslims but as a powerful message to non-Muslims too.

Here's his site:

My personal favorites are Yusuf Islam and Zain Bhikha.

Happy listening  :-*
