The Islamic Shura Council of North America and the Fiqh
Council of North America agreed that there were no moon
sightings in North America on Saturday evening, October 25th.
Therefore, we will complete 30 days in Sha'ban and Monday,
October 27th will be the first day of Ramadan.

Who decides if a citing was made or not?  Does a religious leader have to confirm a citing or can anyone off the street make a claim?  the reason why I ask is because according the scientists it is impossible to see the moon in Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi tonight and all three countries have made claims of the crescents visibility.  If I remember correctly, the same thing happend on the last Eid.  I'm not trying to offend anyone, just asking a question.Does there have to be so many witnesses to the sighting etc.?

Ma'salaama and Ramadan Mubarek

Here some people are fasting today, Sunday, October 26, 2003 because, according to them, the moon was sighted in Egypt and Jordan.

The rest of us will start tomorrow, Monday, October 27, 2003 according to Chief Khadi.

Ramadhan Kareem to all, INSHA-ALLAH

My fiance is in Palestine and they did fast today.  Just in case anyone is interested.  Tomorrow is my first time fasting and I have two midterms!!!  I hope my brain isn't too fried from the lack of glucose and caffeine in my system.  I'm going to bed now (early for me), so I can get up early and eat and drink coffee.  Then, I'll just stay up and study until my little one gets up and off we go.  Wish me luck.

Happy Happy Ramadan to everyone in the world

Egypt, Palestine, Yemen, Djibouti, Tajikstan, Jordan, Sudan, and Nigeria all started fasting on Sunday.  Based on that, many Muslims in America began fasting on Sunday also because I don't think that many people are lying.  They are trustworthy sources and we should all fast together.  If there was a Khalfia and we were united, we would all fast together.  The Council here used calculations.  Calculations existed at the time of the Prophet [saw] but we were told to fast when we see the moon.  From Sahih Al-Bukhari:
1913.  Narrated Ibn 'Umar (ra):  The Prophet [saw] said, "We are an illiterate nation; we neither write, nor know accounts.  The month is like this and this, i.e., sometimes of 29 days and sometimes of 30 days."

And Allah knows best.
