Saudi police kill two militants

Saudi has cracked down on militants since the May attacks
Police in Saudi Arabia have killed two militants in a clash in the holy city of Mecca, Saudi authorities say.
Officers surrounded a house during a security operation and came under fire, according to an official statement.

Two men were killed - and a police officer injured - as they and others tried to flee. A large cache of weapons was later found in their car.

This is the latest in a series of raids by Saudi authorities since May's suicide bombings in Riyadh killed 35.

The official Saudi Press Agency reported that the shoot out occurred as police surrounded two premises in Mecca's al-Sharia neighbourhood at 0800 (0500GMT).

"The terrorists began shooting heavily at security forces, using automatic rifles and hand grenades," the agency quoted an unnamed interior ministry official as saying.

Police fired back as the suspected militants attempted to flee the area in two cars. They hit one of the cars killing its two occupants.

A police officer was slightly injured in the attack.

Shock

Rocket-propelled grenades, automatic weapons and explosives were found inside the car, according to a statement on Saudi state television.

It was not clear how many escaped in the other car.

The BBC's John Simpson in Riyadh says many Saudis will be shocked that such an incident could happen in the important holy city of Mecca.

He said it was unclear whether the inhabitants of the house were planning an attack in the city itself.

The Saudi authorities have been stung by criticism from the United States that they have not done enough to combat terrorism in the country.

Since the bombings on Western compounds in Riyadh in May, the Saudis have launched a major crackdown - arresting 600 suspected militants.

The latest incident follows recent travel advisory from the UK Government, warning that extremists in the country "may be in the final phases of planning attacks".

The US Government warned its citizens in Saudi to be particularly vigilant during Ramadan, saying militant groups may place "special operational significance" on the holy month.

Salaams,

Can't say much but don't take the word of the Saudi Govt as 100%.  Some would say that something sinister is going to take place...especially this hajj time may Allah protect our mosques and our Muslims from the mischeif makers and may Allah expose the mischief makers for what they are doing.

JEDDAH, 8 November 2003 — Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, the imam of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, yesterday denounced plans by militants to destabilize the Kingdom and undermine its security.
The Kingdom’s Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh also condemned the militants who Interior Minister Prince Naif has said were plotting terrorist attacks on pilgrims in Makkah.
“They have violated the sanctity of time and place and committed terrorism, violence, bombings, crime and corruption,” the Makkah imam said while delivering his Friday sermon.
Addressing some one million Muslim faithful who thronged the large mosque complex, Dr. Al-Sudais commended the efforts of Saudi security forces in foiling the terrorists’ plans. The imam was referring to a series of clashes between security forces and suspected militants in Makkah this week.
Two militants blew themselves up on Thursday as police closed in on them in Makkah as part of the country’s crackdown on suspected Al-Qaeda activists following the May 12 bombings in Riyadh.
In his sermon, Sheikh Al-Sudais advised the faithful to make use of Ramadan to win God’s forgiveness and mercy. He stressed the need to teach moderation to the youth. “This is the joint duty of mosque, family, school, university and the media,” he explained.
The imam also criticized those who trigger chaos and confusion in the country in the name of reforms. “They cause violence, carry weapons, undermine security and commit suicide,” Dr. Al-Sudais said.

The UK govt. has put ksa on list of no go countries, it's warned brits to stay away. This seems to have completely ticked off ksa, but if they're going to make big anouncements like the above what does one suppose a non muslim country will do??

BTW My husband reminded me about the Hajj when some people tried to take the haram site over, they entered with guns....!!  My grandparents and or perhaps my parents were there at the time and apparantly bombs were let off in the vicinity (not inside the actual Haram you understand but around it). My grandfather told me that people doing the tawaf tried to run away out of the Haram, he couldn't understand why this was he said he couldn't think of a better place to be martyred and was struggling to get closer to the kabaa...

Wassalaam
