Menses and Fasting

Yesterday a Sister tld me that if you begin menstruating between Magrib and Isha the whole day of fasting does not count, and has to be made up even tho you completed the day.

Her reason is that you have to say all of your prayers for the fast to count and since you can't pray Isha...

Never heard of this... is it true?

I've not personally heard that.. yikes that's a couple of fasts to make up if true....
When I was ickle and went to madrassa, we were taught by an aalimaa. She taught us, that if your menses commense before midday then your fast is invalid and you are allowed to eat and drink but make up the missed fasts later, however if you come on after midday then one is supposed to continue fasting for that days and obviously skip the next few and make them up. I took her word for it as I was very ickle and she was my teacher....!!!!

Ok I asked around and tried to do a little research. I once took a one day Haydh (Menstruation) Seminar for women in Syria. I have ~30 pages of notes!!! This stuff is sooooo complicated u wouldn't believe!!!

So if anyone gets a chance please ask your Imam inshaAllah.

Anyways...

Prayer is separate from fasting and one does not affect the validation of the other (unless you are leaving prayer altogether which of course influences the question of whether you are still Muslim or not). The things that invalidate fasting are what break it -- ie getting your period, eating, drinking, sexual intercourse. You can even commit a sin like not praying out of laziness while fasting and it does not invalidate the fasting but it does take away from the reward according to Sh. Qaradawi.  [According to the minor opinion of Ibn Hazm sins during your fasting invalidate your fasting just like eating or drinking.]

So that whole "You have to pray Isha or else your fast is invalid" I'd have to question... ask the sister to provide her sources.

It is agreed that getting your period any time during your fasting invalidates it and you have to make it up.

As for getting your period before mid day and breaking your fast and getting it after mid-day and continuing someone told me this is in the Hanafi school of thought but i couldn't find any documentation on it. Though, I did find other sources saying, "In the case of a women whose menstruation finishes during the day, there is no obligation upon her to practice the fast for the rest of that day. "

What I did find however is in the Hanafi school of thought if you become PURE during a day of Ramadan, ie your period stops and you take ghusl THEN it is wajib to not eat/drink until the rest of the fasting day because this is in the adab (manners) of Ramadan. (Even though it is still invalid and you still have to make up that day.)

And of course this is for information sources only. For a real Fatwa please ask your Imam or local knowledgeable personl. Allah knows best.
