Proper responses during situation

I notice when someone annouces a baby born or an up coming marriage sometimes the word Mabrook or something like that is said. (I may have the spelling wrong)
What does this mean?

What are some proper heart felt responses to births, engagement, deaths?
When people make announcements or ask for prayers, my heart goes out to them but I am unsure what is a proper Islamically correct way to extend my wishes to them.

[slm] sis
well mabrook as i understand it means congratulations, well done, joy all rolled into one

as for births the nicest one that  i know of was said by the Prophet [saw] to Hasan and husayn
'I commend you two to the protection of Allah's perfect words from every devil vermin, and every evil eye' (Bukhari 4/119)

for deaths or any bad news we say 'From Allah we came and to Him do we return' (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun)

Hope that helps
