Rules of Engagement, ITV 1 Tuesday 11 November @ 21.00

MPAC has been alerted to the following information: ITV 1 is due to show the film Rules of Engagement on Tuesday 11 November at 21.00. This film is about the supposed rescue of the American ambassador from the US Embassy in Yemen and the subsequent massacre of 83 Yemeni civilians during this and the consequences that arise from this.

This is a fictional story yet it is portrayed in such a manner that those watching it are left in considerable doubt about this and leave with the feeling that these events may well have taken place, and the film makers do nothing to make this distinction.

This would be alright if the content matter simply depicted some inane children's story. However, after watching the film the audience comes away with the impression that all Arabs (and Muslims) are hateful and devious and that all Yemenis lie, this brush is used to tar all segments of society from doctors and lawyers to the common man. THERE IS NO POSITIVE ASPECT OF ARABS/MUSLIMS SHOWN IN THIS FILM.

Perhaps even more pertinent is the fact that when the film was being made, it was originally due to be set in a Latin American country, but this was changed by the direction/production team and Paramount Pictures, as it was felt that this was too politically insensitive and offensive and would upset a powerful minority lobby. So what did they do? They thought lets set it in an Arab country, since upsetting Muslims and Arabs is commonplace. Moreover, the director William Friedkin has never been to Yemen and none of the action is shot there either.

We cannot and must not let this kind of thing go unaccounted for. Contact ITV to complain that they have decided to show such a film, raising the following points:

This film is blatant anti-Arab/Muslim propaganda in the form of entertainment
If it was deemed politically inexpedient to be set in a Latin American country, then given the current climate of Islamaphobia, such a film can only add to this and worsen the position of Arabs and Muslims here in the UK (and elsewhere)
We want ITV to clearly state before the programme is aired that it is a work of total fiction and in no way based on real events.
To balance this one-sided piece of hate mongering, we would like ITV to air a film that shows only positive aspects of Arab and Muslim culture and society
