Help Needed...Fasting but invited to lunch?

I have been invited to lunch with the minister of trade tomorrow
(Wednesday)...and I just realized that it is a LUNCH, which isn't convenient in the month of fasting.
I cannot get out of it, but it would look really odd if I didn't eat anything.  I do not
planning on NOT fasting tomorrow, inshallah i will.  However, i need some advice...what
should i say?  should i pretend to eat, and leave early or something?  I don't want to
turn this into an opportunity to explain to people about Ramadan..they start looking at you
as if you're a painting at an art gallery.  Especially in such a professional
environment, i do not plan on discussing ANYTHING personal, INCLUDING my religion.

thank you for your help.

I agree wid yumna ..tellin the truth is a lot better ..u dont have to turn the whole thing into a preaching story ..just simply dont eat and if anyone asks ..inform em that this is the holy month of Ramadan and i am fasting ...
hope things work out for ya

I have to agree with Sr. Hanna and Yumna. I was actually in a similar predicament earlier this week, I just told them the truth. It's the month of fasting and I don't eat or drink anything during the day. They were cool about it, respected it and didn't ask anything else.

I was in a similiar predicament last week.  The new boss came to town and invited the software group out to lunch.  I told him I couldn't go because I was fasting, BUT that I apprecated that he invited.  He was understanding and came to me and said,  he didn't even realize it was ramadan and that he hopes that I find the spirituality that I'm seeking.   []

as salaamu alaykum,

Hmm.. why do you feel that making a simple statement about your faith and your actions is giving away too much personal information?  Doesn't how you dress express some personal information about yourself?  What you order, if you were to eat?  Everything you do tells a little about you :)

As a Muslim, in an environment in which most people know little to nothing about your faith, I think it is expected to receive questions or comments.  If you do not want to open yourself up to scrutiny or interrogation, I would suggest mentioning that you are fasting in a brief, no nonsense way, and say that you would be happy to explain and discuss it further at another time, or after business is discussed.

hope this has helped.. and that it goes well tomorrow :)

wasalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah :-)

The truth is always the best. "Thank you for this opportunity -I will pass on
the lunch as I am fasting for Ramadan" I think enough people on the planet know about
ramadan that they would know. If more questions come up -instead of being intimidated by
their professionalism and power over you -look at it as Allah's favor upon you of being able
to explain about islam to someone. If the minister of trade becomes muslim -more reward
for you. If not, atleast when you stand before Allah you will not be ashamed about this
one lunch.
