Suggestions... best Islamic text for beginnners???

I'm asking for suggestions here. My husbands boss no less approached him and asked if hubby could lend him a good Islamic text for beginners as he's interested in Islam.  We're going to go out and buy him it but what would be a good book for beginners??
I'm going by the following requirements

1) It's got to be easy to understand as I'm going by the assumption that this man doesn't know anything about Islam.
2) Something that will pique his curiousity and make him want more Inshallah
3) Perhaps something that  runs along the lines of what he already knows from his own religion. Boss says his wife is a staunch Catholic, but he wants to know more about Islam.
4) Try and keep it fairly short, I think it might be  a little off putting if hubby hands him a tome to rival war and peace!

We will gift boss man a copy of 'Sealed nectar' when Inshallah he becomes familiar with the basic, and also somewhere along the lines a copy of the English translation of the Quran will be given him.

But for now, I need suggestions, maybe more so from reverts, which books helped/inspired you, what would you gift a friend who wanted to know more??

I feel dileriously happy that hubby's boss has asked, practically want to adopt him into the family, (don't worry I will restrain myself, and no I've not met him so hubby's job is safe :P)

A really good read, short and to the point is:  A Brief Illustrated Guide To Understanding Islam.

If he is really keen and wants a fairly academic text I recommend

The Vision of Islam (Visions of Reality. Understanding Religions)
by Sachiko Murata ,William C. Chittick

It’s a heavy read and quite detailed, very academic in nature. Its written by William Chittick who some don’t like because of his orientalist training. But in my opinion the book is overall very very good – the few problems I identified certainly do not warrant not using the book. Muslim publications tend to be far worse in terms of inaccurate information and spelling errors. They are also generally written from the perspective of a non-Western person. Western people tend to identify with other Westerners or at least, as in this case, Western style writing and discourse. Also generally when they take positions that contradict the traditional Islamic views they do point this fact out in the book – academically honest for the most part which is generally absent from most Muslim publications written trying to convince you their minhaj is the best and everyone else is going to hell – you know that sort of thing. Finally the authors have interacted and studied with traditional Islamic Scholars in their studies and in writing this text  so it is not written from a non-Muslims perspective strictly.

However if they are interested but not so much that they would take the time to read a heavy 300+page book then I recommend:

The Complete Idiot's Guide(R) to Understanding Islam
by Yahiya Emerick ,Qasim Najar ,Quasim Najar ,Yahiya John Emerick

An easier breezy read. Less detailed but still full of the essentials. Written by a Muslim convert. Its somewhat entertaining but can be quite simplistic and this may annoy someone who is being quite skeptical in their investigations into the Deen.
