The Wealth of This World

The wealth of this world, which God has bestowed on you, brings only fleeting pleasure. Far better and more enduring is God's reward to those who believe and put their trust in him; who shun the gross sins and indecencies; who, when angered, are quick to forgive; who obey their Lord, and are regular in their prayers; who take advice from other believers when they must make important decisions; who give to others part of the wealth which God gives them; and who, when injustice occurs, strive to restore justice.

-Qur'an, Ash-Shura, Surah 42:36-39

Sin That May Deface Your Purity

Whenever you are tempted by this world, picture a derelict covered with filth whose noxious odor is intolerable. Reviled you will shut your senses to the offensive sight. In the like manner, stay away from abomination of sin that may deface your purity. The Lord shall bless you with much bounty; therefore let not the cares of this world drive your peace away.

It is God who sends down water from the sky. You drink the water; the water causes crops to grow on which your livestock feed; and it brings forth corn and olives, dates and grapes, and every other fruit. Surely this is a sign for thoughtful people.

The wicked will say: "If only I had been charitable during my life!" But no one can punish as the Lord will punish the wicked on that day. There are no chains stronger than the chains with which the Lord will bind the wicked on that day. May your soul be serene. May your soul be joyful as you return to the Lord. May your soul be as pleasing in his sight. "Enter my paradise, and join my servants."

When God tests you by giving you worldly honor and prosperity, you are inclined to say, "The Lord is kind." But when he tests you by withdrawing his favors, you say, "The Lord is cruel." Yes! But you show no kindness to orphans; you do not compete with one another in feeding the poor. You grab with greedy hands the property of the weak; you are in love with material wealth.

When people gather and remember Allah, the angels surround them and blessings encompass them. Peace descends on them and Allah mentions them to those near Him.

The Unbelievers Say ...

Unbelievers say, "The Qur'an is a forgery. Muhammad wrote it himself, with the help of others." Such words are both evil and false. Unbelievers say, "The Qur'an consists of ancient fables and legends. Muhammad dictates them every morning and evening." I reply, "The Qur'an is revealed by God, who knows the secrets of the heavens and the earth. He is forgiving and merciful."

Neither Business Nor Profit Can Distract

God's light is found in temples which he has allowed to be built. In these temples men and women constantly remember his name; and every morning and evening they sing his praises. Neither business nor profit can distract these people from remembering God, from offering prayers to him, or from giving generously to the poor.

The Qur'an Should Not Be Doubted

"This book should not be doubted. It is a guide to the righteous, who believe in the unseen mysteries, and are steadfast in prayer; who give generously from what we have given them; who trust what has been revealed to Muhammad (SAW) and others before him; and who firmly believe in the life to come." The righteous are those who accept the righteous guidance of their Lord; and they will surely triumph.

You Have Become Arrogant

In separation from God you have become arrogant; pay heed before His scourge strikes you down. Do not exult because of your good fortune. Over and again God admonishes you with the examples of the transgressors before you. If you really want to enjoy the limitless bounty of Allah, surrender yourselves before His will and endure all afflictions with fortitude.

Created From a Single Being

O people, honor your Lord, who created you from a single being. From that being God created a mate; and through them he covered the earth with countless men and women. Honor God, in whose name you demand from one another your rights; and honor the ties of kinship. God is constantly watching over you.

I say that if the sea were ink with which to write the words of my Lord, the sea would surely be consumed before his words were complete. Even if there were a second sea, it too would be consumed—and the task would still now be finished.

Consider the Water

"Consider the water that you drink. Did you pour it from the clouds, or did we? If we wanted, we could turn it bitter. Why, then, do you not give thanks? "Consider the fire which you kindle. Did you create the wood, or did we? We have created the fire as a source of light for all people, and as a beacon for travellers." So praise the name of the Lord, the supreme being.

God Created You From a Single Being

It was God who created you from a single being. From that being God created a mate, so that each might find comfort in the other. And when they had lain together, she conceived. At first the burden was light, and she carried the child easily. When the burden grew heavy, they cried out to God, their Lord, "Grant us a fine child, and we shall be truly grateful!" Yet when God granted them a fine child, they set up other gods besides God, giving thanks to them for what God had done. May God be exalted above all gods.

Rain From the Sky

It is God who sends rain from the sky, bringing forth buds and green leaves on every plant. The rain causes the grain to swell, the palm trees to yield clusters of dates, the vines to yield grapes, and the olive trees to bear olives; it brings forth all manner of pomegranates. The Pleasures to Come

The pleasures of this world are fleeting. The pleasures of the world to come are far greater—for those who avoid evil. You will not be wronged even to the extent of the husk of a date stone. Wherever you are, even if you put yourself in the highest tower, death will overtake you.

The Slave and the Blessed Man

God gives this parable, "On the one hand there is a helpless slave, the property of his master. On the other hand there is a man whom we have greatly blessed; this man is generous both in secret and openly." Are the two alike? All praise is due to God! Yet most people do not understand.

The Devil in Your Nature Cries Out

When you resolve to become pious, the devil in your nature cries out at you, "Tread not those paths, O confused one; distress and poverty will overcome you. You will be despised, let down by friends, you will regret it." Dread of the devil has bound their souls; the cries of the devil are the drover of the damned; the call of the Lord is a guardian of the saints.

When a Storm Cloud Passes

When a storm cloud passes overhead, some people thrust their fingers in their ears to block out the noise of thunder. With every flash of lightning they walk a few steps; but when darkness returns, their eyes are so dazzled that they can see nothing—and thus they stand still. Hypocrites are like such people; their hearts are afraid, and their minds are blind. If God wanted, he could take away their sight and hearing; he has power over all things.

Once a rich merchant, seeing Rabi'a's house falling into disrepair, gave her a thousand pieces of gold and a new house. ... When Fortune and Misfortune Come

When people are blessed with good fortune, they say, "This is from God." And when misfortune comes, they say, "This is Muhammad's fault." Let them understand that all is from God. What has happened to people that they show such lack of understanding? Whatever good befalls you, it is from God; and whatever evil befalls you, it is your own fault.

You Must Become Mad

You must turn your intelligence into ignorance; you must become mad. Whenever you see something that may yield material profit, flee from it. Curse anyone who praises you. There are many signs of God for men and women of understanding. There is the creation of the heavens and the earth. There is the alternation of night and day. The Fruit of Spiritual Devotion

True ecstasy is passive: it overwhelms the heart without any intention or deliberate effort. It is the fruit of spiritual devotion and worship.
