Muslim Professionals in association with North Kirklees Mind and
Birkdale University present the 1st Annual Conference on:

CULTURALLY AWARE COUNSELLING

Date: Saturday 6th December 2003

Times: Registration at 9.15 am, first talk at 10.00 am.

Venue: North Kirklees Mind, Oak and Acorn, Old Westgate, Dewsbury,

West Yorkshire, WF13 1BL

There will be a series of workshops on the day by the following:

* Saqib Saddique – "The Life & Work of Allamah Muhammad Iqbal"

Poetry/literature workshop inspired by the work of Iqbal.

* Moeen Qadri & Muhammed Dadibhai – "The Contributions of Islam   to the Field of Medicine"

An interesting examination of the influence and impact of Islam on modern and traditional medicine.

* Tarif Saddique – "A Youth Perspective on Cultural and Religious Heroes"

Exploratory workshop to consider the appeal and influence of role models.

* Abdul Wajid Khan – "Counselling Muslim Clients"

An informative discussion to look at the dos and don'ts of counselling this particular client base.

* Herminder Verdee – "The Importance of Language in Therapy"

Exploration of language and its use in counselling clients,   especially those who do not have English as a first language.

* Jamie Grummet & Ahsan Shaffi – "Equality at Mind"  

Arts based workshop. No artistic ability required, all materials will be provided.

* Amara Aziz – "The Clue to Life"

Informative workshop on self-awareness.

Cost: Mental Health Professionals / Qualified Counsellors - £45

Non-Mental Health Professionals / Trainee/Associate Counsellors - £15

All equipment, art materials and refreshments will be provided. Lunch is included.

Booking Procedure: Places on workshops are available on a first registered, first served basis.

2. The shortage of ulema willing to help or participate is causing a vacuum whereby individuals with lower levels of knowledge and appreciation are being placed in avenues where they direct policy and change in such organisations.
