Manchester, England vs. New York City

Bismillah.

I saw a good job in Manchester, but I live in New York City. What's life in general like from your perspective as a Muslim living in Manchester, or one who knows it well?

Jazak Allah khair.

Salaams,

Its not too bad bro, I kinda liked it when I stayed there. Has plenty of Islamic options, I'd stay in Stratford as I know a kind scholar who is amazing. City is good as well, although some areas are high on crime, I guess thats the same everywhere else. But above all its quite good.
Let me know if you need any further help, Chris has stayed in Manchester as well.

Thanks for your reply, brother: Jazak Allahu khairan.

The problem is I can't just shift my life to Manchester even if I were able to get the job. I don't have that kind of disposable energy any more. More importantly though, there is a lot of work to do here in New York. The life of a Muslim can be much improved around here, and who's going to do it if everybody moves to Manchester, so to speak?

I think somebody better just hurry up and give me a good job here in New York.

Insh Allah.

It was just a few months ago... early this year that I have contemplated the same question. It began when I found out that a good scholar in my community was probably gonna leave Singapore for another country.

Selfish issues that he is more needed here than there and other reasons to make his stay here more justifyable played in my mind a lot.

But I realised that everywhere in Allah's land, the Muslims' situation are not perfect.. and perhaps, will never attain perfection... rather ... it is far from it... many are still in the dumps. It is those Muslims in that community who would be responsible and accountable to put in effort for things to work.

So.. who am I to say... where is the best place for him... rather I should ask.. where would he be best at? Though it is not for me to answer.. and neither would I know the answer... but...

At the end of the day, everyone will benefit when a person develops to his highest potential. He becomes a better 'Abd & Muslim.. and he can contribute to the community (both Muslim & Non-Muslim) more effectively, inshaAllah. Allah's land is wide and vast. We have the whole world... not just within the geographical and political boundaries that we are used to.

I'm not saying that all of us do hijrah at every opportunity that we see @ first sight. Sometimes, its better to stay where you are rather than leave... sometimes, its better to come back to where you were from, after leaving... and sometimes.. its just better to leave. The dynamics are intricate, and certainly needs deep thought.

2 very interlinked questions that I would ask myself, if I am to do hijrah are... how much of a better person can I be for Allah and how much of a better person can I be for others.

And 1 last thing, personally I feel, that Allah's work do not need us... but we need Allah's work. If some people decided to move away, based on good and sound judgement or not... then, Allah will always bring others in their place to help in His cause. Our responsibility is that we ensure, when we leave, we make things easier for others to take over and do not jeapordise Islam and the community. If you are affiliated to any organisations/ movement... you may wish to discuss what is on your mind, so that your departure is more strategised than piecemeal work. But at the end of the day... you decide.

And with those questions.. I guess, its back to the drawing board and sajadah :) Sorry, if I haven't been too helpful with more practical suggestions.

And Allah knows best. Allahua'lam

P.S. I used to commute to Manchester every now and then for the weekend years ago and ditto to wot Br Haniff said. And like in all places... it is important is that you get connected to the community. Alhamdulillah.. I think there are more opportunities for Islamic growth in cities like Manchester than the smaller towns of England. Allahua'lam.

Jazakum Allah khairan.

Another way to find guidance, perhaps, is to look at the circumstances under which the Prophet  [saw] and his companions radhialla ta'ala anhum were known to relocate, and their motivations for doing so. Some of the ones that you mentioned make good sense, ma sha Allah.

Jazaki Allah khairan for sharing your thoughts.

as-salaamu alaikum

Harrow is a nice area in North London. There is a mosque there and Muslims around.

Public transport will get you to any of London's Law schools within an hour.
