Sis Yumna Actually I am from Yemen. Doha is the capital of Qatar but my name should actually be spelt Dhuha like in the Quran (Surah Ad-Dhuha) it is pronounced differently. InshaAllah there are some Arabs cuz I am starting to feel lonely, jk.

Actually, I am not Ameera...I am Doha, but don't worry, if I find a good brother for you, I will still let you know!  ;) Bro Timbuktu, here is a little on the places I have been to:

Yemen. A beautiful place. My extended family is there (aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc). I stayed in Aden both times I went for about 2 months and a half. My dad grew up there. The beaches there are gorgeous. I went to Ibb and Ti'iz (I have know clue how to spell that) and it was beautiful. Lush green plants everywhere and amazing mountains.

Jordan. Only stayed there for a couple days, but I saw the Dead Sea and drove around and went to a gift shop. The Dead Sea is pretty cool too, really salty!

Egypt. I was only a kid then, but looking at the pictures brought back happy memories. Those pyrimads are truly a wonder!

My dream is to go to Saudi Arabia soon. I would love to do Umra. My cousin is getting married this summer there.

And then there are some southern US states I have been to(I live in Michigan). I have been to Windsor, Canada a couple of times, it is like 15 min from my house.

I guess thats about it!

No, that was actually pretty good. You meant that you want to visit Yemen soon. So you could say Ureedu anzul al Yemen which means you wish to go to Yemen, or Ashti anzul al Yemen which means I want to go to Yemen. Either way works.

Sis olive_tree, your Arabic was good too.

sis doha: thanks. it was nice of you to tell us about these places. but you have increased my appetite for learning more about these places. sister azizah asked us to tell about our countries, but the thread did not attract many people. I think a new thread should be started, & we should tell of our experiences in various lands, describing the land as well.

i will try to locate the thread of sister azizah, but if someone can beat me to it, i will be happy.

sis Nur_al_Layl: i don't know why but i thought you were originally from the Indo_pak subcontinent. could you tell us about hadramout, & yemen, & all the other places you have been to. it will be like us visiting these places.

& this request to describe your place of origin & visits is to all B & S.

Few months back, we had a sister from Saudia on board who was teaching Arabic, don't know what happened to her. She stopped posting. I guess, she didn't like her students, Nomi was one of them  :P.

That poor girl from Saudi just needed some encouragement, but not to be! Overall that was a good learning experience.

BTW "ana arif bil lugatul arabia shoya shoya" and i'm saving all the fun i had with arabs in the Holy cities for some other day, some of the best memories of my life .... (but too much fun is baaad for spiritual health, rememberance of death is recommended to everyone... me the most)

Bro Asim: MashaAllah, al Arabi haqak malih (your Arabic is good). You should share your experience in Mecca. I have always wanted to go. InshaAllah someday...

You know what, we should have a word of the day. Every day we should learn a new word in Arabic, Urdu and any other language someone out there knows. It would be a great learning experience.

As Salam Alaikum

Sis Doha and Nur, I am in Tarim (Hadramout Valley).  How long have you guys lived there?  I love it here....the people are more than just amazing.  It is a very mubarak place and there are many students of ilm here.

Many of the western brothers are studying at Darul Mustafa and I am trying to study at Darul Zahra.

What's even more incredible about Tarim is that majority of the people here are related to the family of the prophet (saas).  They have a direct chain and the most authentic that goes back to Sayydina hussein and Sayydina Hasan.

Let me know if you are ever in Hadramout...

Your sis :)

15 years and no arabic!!!! gimme just 1 year and watch me breeze it to you all! Learn arabic while you can sis, its one of my goals in life ... inshaAllah.

And lotsa heated discussions on the board, my stupid post about bombing was just about to add fuel to the fire but an uncle asked me to take it off. OK... to calm things down how about some fun under Arabia sun? :P ......... here goes nothing...

Desi in the Holy Cities (Just some funny clips)

2001 with ammi and grandfather: Before leaving i asked my bro's friend to teach me dos and donts of imama (turban) as i was yet to decide that whether i'll be shaving my head or go for 1 inch trim from all side. Learnt how to tie it neat (headband style) and took a white and a black one with me.

Upon reaching the airport people were getting body-searched (mildly), when i reached the guy on duty i smiled at him coz he looked soo young. And the guy decided to =>BODY-SEARCH<= me .... (sheesh karaylaas) ... ppl plz never smile when you are to be body searched!!

Getting it off my mind was hard coz i was feeling offended ::), anyhow after a tiring journey we reached Mecca (from Riyadh) and straightened our backs at the hotel (dar-i-Rehan on Jabl Ali, opposite to bab-a-umrah). When it was time for meal an alim that was in our group and i set out to get food for our group, went to an arab's shop but the food was tasteless. The alim ofcourse was good at arabic so i asked him to give me the arabic word for (mirch masala) and told the arab shop keeper "ya akhi filfil mafee ??" heh... and he handed us some in a packet.

When it was time to get the hair trimmed i opted for getting my head shaved (one of the hardest things i did in my life). The "towel" ehraam that i was wearing stuck my bald head like a sticking-strap and my ammi was laughing at me coz i wasn't willing to show anyone my shinning "tind". They say there is more thawaab in it!.. inshaAllah..

So all went well till *something* fell! It rained while we were in mecca and i was really really wanting to do some sajuud infront of kabah but i was at the hotel! So i rushed out and ammi told me many a times to be careful its slippery, i said dont worry i aint no kid anymore (yea yea). So me in my white imama and long arab dress was on my way, i was climbing downstairs from jabl-Ali and right infront of a couple of restaurants with the whole world eating there, i slipped!!! bhaaaaaaam. A six foot guy lieing there facing the sky (nice and shiny). Here is the interesting part... ppl helped me get up and said "ya sheikh anta ba khaer", they thought i'm an Arab, good take, here is a chance for me not to give a bad name to Pakis, so i left without uttering a word :P :P :P :P

Alhamdulillah there wern't any bruises and me got the required done. Another day i was on the first floor in masjid (still in mecca) in the same attire i talked about before and this arab boy came to me "assalamu alaikum ya akhi... gebrish, gebrish, gebrish", didn't get a word and told him "anna mafee arif bil lugatil arabia". He seemed shocked and when i told him that "i'm from Lahore, Pakistan" he was amazed and excited, told me that he wish to visit Raiwand and the reason he came to me was to do dawah!

The two problems i had till now weren't bothering me any more and i was alhamdulillah enjoying each minute of it. One challenge was to kiss hajre-aswad where the toughest of my group failed but the slim enthusiatic me did it twice, even helped an indonesian couple do it by blocking the Sudanis :P. This one tall guy about twice my size was trying his level best to get to the stone-from-jannah but when he was about there he uttered a loud "Khallas" and quit! (the thought made me laugh for days......... astagfirullah)

One common problem there is losing your shoe, same happened to me but the worse thing was losing something else! This time it was my grandfather!! and it was night time. I left my mother with women of the group and set out to search for him, a couple of hours of exhaustive search but to no avail. Alhamdulillah another Paki from karachi helped him find his way back.

By now i was starting to feel like an arab :P. Went to madina and was amazed to see the new masjid-a-nabvi. Bin-Ladens were everywhere!!! coz the contract of maintaining the masjid is signed to Bin-Laden construction company and everyone wears the logo shirt. I thought of buying a gift abaya+niqaab for my sis, which started another interesting conversation with the arab boy who was keeping the shop! I had lotsa troubled-fun in making him understand what i'm looking for and bargaining. There were few design with low cut necklines and coz i had become a mean dawah machine till now so i tried to convince him that you shouldn't display/sell them while two indonesian ladies watched me say "ya akhi haza shoya kabeer min haena". But alas he dint get my broken arabic... next time inshaAllah.

When it was time to get back home i was just checking out the shops at Riyadh airport and this another saudi lad came to me and said "anta bakistani"... hm... i was thinking of telling him "believe me, i've got no drugs on me" but then i thought i already ran into trouble by smiling at one official, must not do it again, so i admitted. He asked me to follow him!!! now now, whats this all about! But all the arabs were so much hospitable to me that i took the chance. He lead me to an office and handed me this cute blue office bag with some six books in it including "Riyadh-us-saliheen". I thanked him and his fellows and found my way back to my group, i was still wary about the whole thing so i got all the books out and examined the bag to find out if its "clean" (pathetic) ... even sniffed it (double pathetic)

That would be all for now.

Hey Nomi, did u drive all the way from Riyadh to Mecca? Why didn't u go from Jeddah or Madinah? Jeddah and MAdinah have airports too, Jeddah being closest to Makkah.

Rule of thumb...........Being a male, NEVER smile to security guards on airport, no matter which airport that is. Simply put, it gives wrong signals to them, specially when u and they both know that u are carrying a "Green Passport" :).
