HYDERABAD : The Muslim community of the United States of America (USA) is stronger than before in the political waters of Washington , said Prof Karen Leonard from the department of anthropology, University of California .

Delivering a lecture on ‘American Muslim Politics’ on Sunday at the Abdul Kalam Azad Oriental Research Institute, Public Gardens, she said that contrary to popular belief, the September 11 terrorist attack has only made American politics more receptive to the Muslims in the region.

“ Washington has been consulting many of the Muslim associations in the country since the incident,’’ she said.

There are three different groups of Muslims in the USA — the African-American Muslims, the Arabs and the South Asian Muslims. “There is commendable presence of Hyderabadi Muslims as well, especially in Chicago ,’’ Leonard added.

Though there are hundreds of Muslim associations in the country, the ones that are politically inclined are the ones that have managed to unite these three different groups, she said.

“While the associations of the African American Muslims are more religion oriented and more so against the whites, the Arabs are lobbying to protect the rights of their community,’’ Leonard said. “South Asians are more like missionaries who taught the African-Americans, the spirit of Islam,’’ she added.

According to Leonard, previously only the Catholics and Jews had such associations lobbying in Washington . But as the Muslim population grew, so did the need for Muslims to participate in their country’s politics, she said.

“Many student Muslim associations are using Islam as a means to make themselves heard and thereby breach the boundaries between them and the native Americans,’’ she said. “If these youngsters come to power, the political landscape will change,’’ she added.

Tracing the movement of Muslims in the political milieu, she said that the President George Bush had talks with these associations in 2001 and an unspoken cordial relationship was established between the people of the two races.

“There have been many Id celebrations and Iftar parties in America in recent times,’’ she added.

Right now, the American society is said to be demanding that Muslim women play a more active role in their associations.

Kate Leonard has been a frequent visitor to the city doing research on the old Hyderabad culture. Some of her published works include, ‘South Asian Americans’ and ‘Muslims in USA ’.
