alsalamu alaykum wa rhmat Ullahi wa barakatuh:)

There was a message thread about this on the Ramadhan board, but everything has been taken down temporarily. I promised a reply to the issue that was raised about calculating Fajr time.

Alhamdulillah, i had the opportunity to speak with the Imam of the main mosque in my city about this. I explained the issue of calculating Fajr with either the 15  or 18 degree method and he said that individuals
may go with whichever time they feel is correct. He said we have a prayer
timetable for the city and that is good to follow. He further explained
that a person may continue eating up until Fajr time.

As well, another brother kindly pointed out a reminder saying, "As in any other fiqh issue, as long as you follow a valid opinion from reputable scholars you should be o.k. Some scholars in north america have made ijtihad on this issue and determined that 15 degrees is the number they feel is most correct for this region of the world. They could be wrong of course, but we will not be accountable if they make a mistake inshallah unless we have the knowledge to make a better decision which, at least speaking for myself, I do not and Allah (SWT) knows best. Of course you are free to follow any valid opinion that your heart feels more comfortable with and inshallah Allah (SWT) will accept from all of us.

I hope this link will help to explain the issue and difference of opinion.

I hope that clears things up for those who got confused (like me)
