:(

What do you guys do about them? Other than trimming - is there anything out there that works? Lately i've been dreading the thought of just looking at my ends - they're scary :o - i told my mother i was turning into an alien  :D But seriously...do any of you have any advice?

JazakAllah

Regular trimmings if even just a 1/2 inch.
I have very long hair so I don't like chopping it off either. But even 1/2 to 1 inch every 4 to 6 months. If you don't then hair just keeps splitting or so it seems.
I like Paul Mitchell's  The Conditioner, it is a leave in moisterizer and conditioner. (it is blue in color) I shampoo, condition and rinse the regular conditioner and then use this Paul Mitchell stuff,  rub a little in my hands, rub it in my hair and comb it through.
Does the trick on split ends and that fly away hair.
You can find it in most beauty salons and a little goes a VERY long way. I am still using the same 33 oz bottle I started using over a year ago. You use only like the size of a dime. Rub a little in the ends too.

I had really bad split ends, and didn't want to get my hair cut either. But eventually I had to, because it was getting worse. I was using a leave in conditioner also, it ws by John Frieda, and called Sheer Blonde Dream Cream, and it worked good, until my hair got too bad and I did get it cut 2 months ago..

lol...a brotha worrying about split ends.  The answer to your question is NO.  I imagine you get it cut quite often.

Since I'm Pakistani (lol), I would suggest olive oil on the ends of your hair the night before you wash your hair.  And then in the morning add some more to your whole head, and then wash it off.  (And don't NOT use conditioner.  What's up with that?)  If you don't wash your hair in the mornings...well can't help you there, unless you wouldn't mind walking around with olive oil in your hair all day.

If you don't like olive oil...there's that VO5 thing.  It r0x.  And it smells ok.

Wasalaam.

[slm] what causes split ends?

The hair is made up of very fine fibrelets, twisted together like in a cotton thread. These are kept in place by body oils. When the supply of this oil dries up, the fibrelets begin to unwind, & the ends split.

once i had 8 fibrelets at my split hair-end, & my hair was very short. I showed this to my daughter, & she was terribly frightened. So, being male & having short hair does not make you immune to split ends.

In the East, oiling your hair was very common before the adoption of modern beauty aids, & split ends were rare. Now, with a shower each day, & the synthetic hair shampoos and conditioners, the natural oils get washed off easily, & there is no replacement, except by mineral-based oils (vaseline, etc.), which remove whatever natural oil is left.

so JO's olive oil is a better remedy. If you can get Malaysia's coconut oil, it is without a scent, so it is even better. or any vegetable oil without a smell should do.

There are some creams & lotions & maybe hair oils (by extension) that contain pork fats (they are closest to human body oils), so beware

Sr. JO's idea is excellent. Piece of trivia; Olive oil is also supposed to prevent your hair turning white too.
In addition to the above don't expose your hair to too much sun light either cos you'll only end up with a haystack eventually.
I never use commercial shampoos or conditioners. I used to make my own till I discovered a quaint shop called Lush (I think there's like one in Canada).
I tend to use Mehndi based shampoos anyway as Mehndi is good for keeping hair moisturised it's also a natural conditioner.. I wouldn't advise trying to shampoo ones hair with it neat, depending on your hair colour you might end up with a bright orange head...  But if that's what your after...
Also never comb hair whilst it's wet, always use conditioner, and a hair treatment once a week (I always use herbal stuff if I can).
Lastly if you can bear it after washing your hair, blast your scalp and hair with a shot of freezing cold water, guaranteed you'll have really shiny hair... Don't ask me why.

As for bro's worrying about split ends... methinks the probability of men going bald first is much higher so that's OK then!!

Regular trimmings helps, not much, just 1/2 to 1 inch

Water, I notice my hair does better when I make sure I have plenty of water.

I stopped using bands to hold my hair back, as I have hair down the middle of my back and noticed the ends splitting near the base of my neck where the hair band would be, I now use the hair clips.

There is a way to snip off split ends a salon person showed me. You take little bits of hair at a time, like the amount as thick as your finger, twist it (not tight) and the split ends seem to pop out to the sides of the twist and you can clip the individual split ends. I can do the sides myself but you need someone else to do the back for you.

And rubbing the paul mitchel stuff really works at keeping them at bay.

Oh and eatting right and drinking lots of water does help, also helps skin, I see so many young people using soda pop as their main and sometimes only liquid/fluid  intake.   :P
water......water.......water    ;)

ADDED LATER: I though of a few more tips as I have had long hair most of my 42 years.
1) No blow dryers........I hadly ever ever use one
2) No brushes...........brushes seem to make hair break easier, I recommend a wide tooth comb all the time.
3) Always comb from the bottom up, comb ends and with each stroke comb higher up in 1 ot 2 inch incremints. Working your way up to top of your head.
4) Some woman twist and wrap a towel on their heads to dry hair, just pat dry, maybe squeese towel but I recommend not twisting the towel around your hair.

I am not expert nor hair tech, these are just things that work for me.
PS:  WATER   ;) Drink lots of water, this take weeks and months to show an effect, so drinking water for one week will not show results, months of proper hydration shows results.
Outside of proper and gentle care, sometimes things beyond our control have a direct effect on our hair such as stress and hormones. And keep thoses scraves on as wind will split hair and dry it out big time, I know, I use to live in a very windy area.

And JazakAllah!

All those tips, well especially the ones about combating dryness make a lot of sense to me. I remember when i first started getting split ends i did some research but i couldn't really figure out why cause none of the commonly cited reasons didn't apply, and so i put it down to stress and diet (it was around the time i decided to major in biochem) I think might have had something to do with it  ;) But dryness is probably the biggest factor.

JazakAllah...thank you so much.

Just another question, do you girls think length has anything to do with it  - or do some people experience split ends even with short/shoulder length hair?

It probably shows up more with longer hair as it's older if you understand what I mean. But a girl I used to go to school with had split ends and her hair barely reached her shoulders, mine is much longer and I don't suffer from split ends much, regular trimmings and I mean trimmings not lopping off yards of hair, keep it in good condition Alhumdulillah.

[slm] i think it has almost entirely to do with dryness.

also, the skin will age faster with loss of body oils.

in old times (not that old, you can still see it in villages here), people would rub their bodies with oil before taking a bath, particularly in dry winters. Kept their bodies looking (& feeling great).

In cold climes, you will be asked to keep away from gas heaters, the skin dries up, & wrinkles will appear earlier than expected.
