I need help..I am researching the concept of Tawbah in the Old Testament, New Testament and comparing with Quran.

Is there a specific way to search through the bible??? I am sooo lost amidst verses and references that are driving my little already preoccupied brain nuts  ::) even a rudimentary overview of the bible would help..like what makes the bible? Old testament? what about the other books?

If someone out there has actually talked about this, or written, i am sure it will help..i am doing the work its just messier than I thought it would be:(

Jazakumu Allahu Khayran Katheeran:)

Strugglin sis :-)

Back in the day when i dealt with christian missionaries I would use the searching feature from this site:

http://www.gospelcom.net/

But I don't understand why you would want to search the concept of Tawbah in their books?  I mean we know their books are corrupted and false, there maybe some truthful things in there, but why even bother? ???

Get yourself a "Bible Concordance" -- it's an index of all of the major themes found within the Bible.  Searching for repentence with an on-line sight will only get you verses where the word is mentioned.  A concordance will give you a bit more (ie: access to commentary, derived words -- for example, say it is a Greek translation, it will give you all of the various words used for the theme).

Your local library will have a bunch -- you can also do a book search or an article search, for commenatries and academic journals on the subject.  This will also narrow your paper down and help you find a specific topic (ie: repentence and the issue of free will or predestination).

Who are you using so far for Qur'anic sourses?  This is a huge topic...have you thought of looking at specific instances of tawbah (like the Day of Attonement in Judaism, the overarching Christian theology stating that Christ was sent and died for people's sins, and the various Islamic viewpoints -- such as a Hajj performed properly wipes one of sin), instead of just a textual exploration or a doctrinal comparison?

As for truthfulness...only Allah, Subhanna wa ta 'ala, knows what is True and what is not.

wasalaam,
Nistar.

Jazakumu Allahu Khayran Nistar/Bhaloo...I gotta check out the concordance, the online site helped but as you said I realized I still had to cross check or read a whole chapter to understand what its talking about. Subhana Allah, I don't get it why is it so hard for me to understand the bible?! I am serious, I read passages like a gazillion times to understand the minor gist of it  :'( its frustrating.

Anywho, I haven't narrowed down my scope for now I gotta just collect the concepts and pick and choose the themes I will focus on, but thanks that really helped Nistar. bhaloo you don't think there is any merit to study other religions and compare/contrast with our own belief system???

In need of mad duahs :-)

I think Br Shabir ally has also dealth with this topic in his debate with Mr Jackson esp the old testaments views and practises you can find these archived in www.islamicity.com

In the old testament tawbah was in the form a of personal repentance as well as a community sacrifice ,in brief  the  rabbi would take two goats
sacrifise one and rub its blood on the head of the other (scapegoat) and let it run in the wilderness

In the new testament esp in the latter books of john, romans coranthians etc (the St paul generation of litt) The concept of original sin was evolved where man was a sinner by virtues of hsi his ancesteral relationship with Adam PUBH -Nauzbillah and the theme is carried on ............
