Dear Brother/Sister:

The City Circle is an informal group that was recently formed by a group of young Muslim professionals in northern NJ. We convene gatherings on the 3rd Saturday of each month. These gatherings act as forums for intellectual discourse, spiritual nourishment, community activity and social networking. We are strictly non-sectarian & non-political.

Our second event is a discussion by Amir Al-Islam. Mr. Al-Islam is presently a Distinguished Lecturer of African American History and World Civilization at Medgar Evers College. Mr. Al-Islam is the founder of the Muslim Forum for Dialogue, a non-profit organization that promotes communication, cooperation and collaboration between people of various religious, ethnic and culturally diverse backgrounds. He was the former Secretary General of the World Conference on Religion and Peace, USA, an international interfaith organization affiliated with the United Nations.

Through his work at the WCRP/USA and other multi-religions organizations, Mr. Al-Islam participated in several interfaith initiatives at the international level, such as the UN Conference on Social Development in Copenhagen, Habitat II in Istanbul, Turkey, the World Conference of Religious Leaders at the Vatican in 1995, the World Parliament of Religions in South Africa, the Millennium World Peace Summit at the UN and was one of the first Muslims to visit Auschwitz, Poland, as a delegate of the International Conference on Religion and Peace. Professor Al-Islam was also instrumental in establishing one of the first interfaith councils in Sierra Leone, West Africa. This multi-religious body—The Inter-religious Council, was instrumental in negotiating the peace settlement in Sierra Leone in 2000.

Mr. Al-Islam has had years of experience in the field of interfaith dialogue and multi-religious activities in the U.S. through his work `in the Muslim World League Office to the United Nations, where he served as the Director of Indigenous Muslim Affairs from 1975 to 1988.
