Not the song ppl, but these tracks keep coming back to you every now and then no matter how hard you try to forget them!!.... its a hopeless situation :$

Anywho, its marriage season here in Pakiland and the whole world is in da queue. I've always wondered that how can one justify spending averaging 25,000 Rs. on a bridal dress and same for the groom (sherwani) for just one day!!!

25,000... thats more expensive than your camera bro bhaloo and the upper limit is 60 - 70,000 Rs. even!!! Probly when you guys convert it to $$$ it wont sound *that* much but by paki standards thats alot of money. Ofcourse same will be the case with everyone regardless of their location coz i know full well how expensive stuff is in different parts of the world.

SO,..................... is it justified to spend that much money on a dress that you wont wear ever again in you life ???

Salaams,

Of course its justified, what you wear at night is stricly your personal business as a married couple, its not just a dress but its everything that goes with it, c'mon you don't get married every day now do yah??? and you won't be a you know after the you know... *nod *nod* *wink *wink.

So  don't let my poor post get in the way of your excitement. Oh by the way you can wear my suit if you wanna.

Salaams

Keep your short suit with you uncle hanif :P :P

Alhamdulillah i can buy a nice suit for each day of marriage functions. But these suits seem too flashy to me now like a couple of days back a fast friend of mine (the same guy who runs that factory) got married and i thought of buying one for the valima then i thought i wont be wearing it till next such function (of a close friend not every function) so i said nah!

Besides, when you get appreciation for the usual formal wear then why go for the suits ;) ... and there should be some use of those two dozen shirts lined up in your closet!!

Actually my mother bought my sis some *expensive* dresses for her wedding, the one to be wore on wedding day was around 25,000 Rs. and its never to be worn again! I know that i wont be able to convince the ladies in da house but i'll get my points for trying inshaAllah.

One good use that comes to mind of them expensive dresses later in life is that when we will become grouchy women and old hard headed men, we'll show these dresses to our granchildren with our shaking hands and tell them "bayta yeh surakhoon wala lebaas hum nae apunay beyaah per pehna tha, tumharee bagaer daantoon walee dadee us waqt bohat khoobsurat lag rahee thee" (child i wore this ragged dress at my wedding and your granny who is missing her teeth now was looking so bootiful that day) and blah................

Sorry BroHanif, you, like my family, weren't able to convince me.

Well, I have mixed views on this one. It certainly is wedding season here in Pakistan, and we have yet another nikkah to attend this weekend and a walima early next week.

Anyway...I think spending more than Rs.20,000 is ridiculous. Some of these Defence weddings, the dresses were almost a lakh because they were made by some top fashion designer. I think yes, your wedding day is very special and you should have something beautiful on but something reasonable. I mean who doesn't love a ghaara?  ;D

But a possible solution to making good use out of the dress is to donate it. It seems a lot of girls can not get married due to dowry and other marriage related fees. So I think it would be great if the wedding dress and all the other clothes from the valima ect. could be donated. And it would be really easy to do, for example most of the domestic help (massis) who work in the houses here in Pakistan, would love to have that wedding dress.

Just a thought....

Date: 25,000 in Pakistan rupees equals: Exchange rate:
15 Dec 2003 435.32 US dollars (noon) 0.01741 (57.4289)

about 500 US dollars is a darn good price for a wedding dress.. even desi style... averages around here are 800-1200... probably because the stuff gets imported and they mark it up here

but i'm not sure what the problem is?? i would *hope* it cost more than ur camera

it is the single most important dress you'll ever wear... AND i don't know where you got the idea that you never wear it again... girls DO wear it again at their sibling's shaadis and other weddings... i even wore my mother's dress on a few occassions

and if you want and can afford a designer dress of course it's gonna cost you...

i think people should be moderate in everything, but if people are wealthy and want to spend more money on their personal items including their weddings they should be allowed to... it's something Allah gave them and to be ascetic and stuff is nice, but not something everyone goes for.

plus personally i think desi women are the most frugal on earth.. (desi men being the cheapest :p j/k) i doubt they'd buy something without checking all the options and quality for the money.

The one sold here @ 25K PKR will definitly be sold there @ 50K PKR which would make around 900 $$$ (for many obvious reasons). And ppl wearing the thing twice in 30 years was a good idea :P, what if there isn't any female child? I mean a ghaagra or lehnga wont look fine on a bearded guy like me you know!

Sis Jannah, I totally agree with you when you convert it into American dollars. I mean you can't even buy a decent hijab in the States for less then $10 and over here they cost around $2.

But what I disagree with is when middle class families here go over board and find the money through haraam means for that designer wedding dress and flowers imported from Thailand ( no joke, either I have been to a wedding like this )

A year ago I wouldn't have thought Rs. 25,000 was a lot of money, and I was crazy over how cheap everything was. Now, though when I work and earn in rupees, I  :'( when I convert it into American dollars.

Never convert it in dollars OR dollars to rupees. It goes both for us living here and for them living there. Like when somebody from our part of the world goes to west they stop eating fruits. Like who'll eat a mango for 60 RS. ??? While one can get 2 KG mangoes in a dollar here, that'll be around 8-10 Mangoes.

So the difference is around ten times, thats why all my friends did lotsa shopping (dresses) before leaving for their studies. Do you brothers know what a "semester jeans" means? :P

Remember that those who earn in dollars/pounds, *spend* in dollars/pounds :)
