Milad Sharif? Questions?

[slm]

Last night I went to Milad Sharif. Now I went having absolutely no idea what was going on and what exactly a Milad was. Like I said in my introduction, I’ve only been in Pakistan a year and maybe this is a dumb question but I am really confused…

So it was held at a friend of our family’s home. These people are very prominent and come from a Sindhi political family. I didn’t really want to attend since I didn’t know what I was getting into but if I hadn’t made an appearance it would have seemed really rude.

Anyway, I walk in since the women of the house observe strict purdah (they only go out the house when they visit their village and that is at night in full niquab) go past the guards, and into the gate and they live in a huge house in Defence and they have the typical tents set up outside for dinner and then I hear this singing coming from upstairs. And I grew up around Arabs and I love nasheeds. But this was different, I mean I know they are naats, and my understanding of Urdu is not perfect but all the women were sitting on the floor and were hysterical. Then when women started wailing, the host stood up and started sprinkling water on every one. And in the middle of this song or naat about Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) this one lady stands up and her eyes are rolling to the back of her head and she was completely out of it and yells, “Asalaam Alaikum!” and then everyone else was like, “Subhan’Allah!” and doing that adab thing (when they touch their forehead?) and I was getting really freaked out…then I guess the climax of the whole thing came…They stopped singing and turned the lights out and started chanted, “Allah!” but they would extend the word and say it really fast and everyone was rocking back and forth and just in hysterics and then they would stop and change to, “La illaha illa” and slow down and everyone was wailing…and then they all stood up and started singing towards the wall which had a flower garland around a calligraphy of the word “Allah” and the host started walking around with incense…

So my question is what exactly went on? And what is Milad Shareef? And I’m not loking for a fatwa or anything but is this stuff correct or ‘bidah or what? I mean I have never seen people so hysterical…I didn’t know what I was supposed to do, so I kept quiet and watched. And the thing is driving home there were lots of these events going on, you could tell by the setups in people’s lawns…I mean I was so confused, of course we are supposed to love the Prophet Muhammed  [saw], a few women just seemed totally out of it and in a trance…

Please, can someone explain for me?

I apologize if I have offended anyone or this practice. I am just trying to learn more and stay away from invocations.

Milad (mawlid) is the celebration of the birthday of the prophet [saw]. There is a difference of opinion among the scholars on the need/necessity to celebrate. What you described is exactly why many of the scholars condemn this practice as it is not in anyway consonant with the sunnah. Often times, a lot of shirk in poetry is recited as well. But others opine that if the celebrations are within the bounds of sunnah, it is permissible to participate. To make it simple for you, milad (mawlid) was not practiced by the earliest 3 generations (at least not in this fashion in any case). Therefore, staying away would not be unwise, imho. But use tact and try not to offend.

[slm] you have seen what the prophet warned will come about in the Ummah (bid3a).

we all have to learn & give daw3a to bring our brothers & sisters back to the true Islam.

in Islamabad after Dr Farhat Hashmi started her "Al-Huda International", many girls & women & their children have been transformed. I haven't seen such effect on the grown-up males though.

The prophet  [saw] never celebrated his birthday neither the 3 generations of early muslims so why should we? there is NO basis in the sunnah for that practice or ANY milad practice . (What he did was kept fast on Monday because he was born on a Monday)

What you experience was biddah and may even fall into shirk!! May allah save this ummah from this type of practice and may he guide us to the path of  quraan pure sunnah.

As superFOB said it is better to stay away from these things ....and as Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal  stressed do not sit with the people of biddah unless you become just like them (ie follow their practice)

Wassalam
