Help me! What can I include or do for the Martin Luther King Day Islamic Dawah table?

[quote]Call for Participants: Do you have resources to teach about Peace and Social Justice?  Does your faith community have programs that help promote these values?  If so, please share your strategies and successes with others.  Each program will have space to display information and resources (e.g., books, videos, scrapbooks) related to their activity.[/quote]

I want to focus on Peace....

awww..Kathy {{{{hugsss}}}}} a good night sleep and some rest might just pump you up you know:)

aight i am just brainstorming..and really this is after working on a very brain numbing paper for the past coupla hours...so umm..don't expect anything you prolly haven't thought about :P

Peace In Islam:
We can look at peace in two ways:
Internally:
How does Islam accomplish "peace within" as this will be manifested into the larger society?
Prayer, dhikr, fasting, etc. these acts of worship are constant reminders of our essence, Allah and our purpose on life. Restless and yearning souls find their abode of contentment within the realm of Remembrance.

Externally/societally:
Mercy and Kindness: The Rasul [saw] sent as a Mercy, Quran as Mercy and guidance, Allah as All Merciful and Compassionate urging us to display this fundamental aspect of our deen to each other.

unity of worship: Congregational prayer, Hajj, facing the Qibla, etc. Every aspect of our ibadah is geared towards Onness of being, communally, and internationally.

Oneness of Messages: From Adam (AS) To the Rasul  [saw]..we see the continuity of the message.

Racial/Ethnic Unity: Diversity of Muslims and transcendance of our deen.

Jihad:
Conditions, stipulations, restrictions and why is it necessary?

As far as visuals:
-Displays of Muslim from around the world, different shades, clothes, etc.
(any cultural artifacts you have can be used to accentuate this).

-A video showing scenes of Hajj..I think that would be amazing:)

-A self explanatory poster board on Jihad: that has ayahs, hadiths, and maybe blurbs of why? restrictions, oppression etc. (this will be hard..)

-Little pamphlets talking about the unity of the Messages and the connection.

-Any community pics you have engaged in, Dawah wise, feeding homeless, field trips with children, interactions with larger society.

sorry that's it for now..i am shutting down at a fast rate...we'll be back Inshaallah....i hope that helped..maybe...somewhat:)

aight sis, may Allah give you strength and the creative juices to dazzle 'em with ya charm alone ;)

one more thought, what's amazing about our faith is we don't need programs as all these values are inculcated within the lifestyle. If smiling is charity and removing a thorn from the road is charity..then it really puts a different specs on the followers...

In typically largely muslim populated areas (back home), there is no set "volunteer" organization within the neighborhoods. Not even a concept of what volunteering means..but people take care of each other, and life is lead in a very communal way (the article in the shahada forum talks beautifully about this..)

but i guess that's what makes it hard for you...cuz in essence you are just doing Dawah (what you normally do) and emphasizing on the peaceful aspects...

okay i stopped making sense before i started writing ::)  sigh...

Just a few suggestions off the top of my head,

Include some information about prominent muslim figures from that time period - eg. Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, quotes, bios. And perhaps to go along with that, other muslim figures from other parts of the world/and throughout history that stood up for social justice and tried to promote peace, again with bio/quotes/descriptions of what they did.

Another thought that came to mind was maybe including the Charter of Madina with an explaination of how Prophet Muhammad [saw] was asked to come to Madina as a mediator, to bring peace. The last sermon of Prophet Muhammad [saw] would also be good - specially for the social justice/values aspect.

And of course, info about Islam itself in relation to peace and social justice/values. Quotes from the Quran, hadiths, some of the 'discover islam' posters would be ideal - if you have any.

Nothing really creative I know, Hmm...let me see,

Videos, Muhammad [saw] Legacy of the Prophet (PBS) might be a nice one to have playing at the booth. Or maybe some nasheeds, in english with relevant lyrics (Yusuf Islam, Dawud Wharnsby, Zain Bikha etc)

How long do you have to prepare? Maybe you could get a couple of children to write poems/draw posters about islam and peace and what it means to them - or ask people to submit quotes, verses, hadiths that have really touched them, helped them be at peace with themselves, or illustrate the social aspects of islam that they really admire, and describe why those words touched them in a sentence or two and make a little scrapbook...

InshaAllah that'll help somewhat :)
