- Excerpt from the book 'Don't Be Sad' by Shaykh 'Aa`id al-Qarnee

a. A thankful heart, a remembering tongue and a patient body:

A couplet reads:

“Thankfulness, remembrance and patience, In them are blessings and rewards.”

If I were to present to you the wisdom of the scholars and thinkers concerning happiness, so sound is their advice that you would not hesitate in applying their precepts.

b. Another ingredient of happiness is the keeping of secrets, especially one’s own secrets.

From the narratives of the Arabs is the story of a Bedouin who was entrusted with a secret for a fee of twenty dinars. At first he thought of accepting the deal but then he realized the worth of maintaining secrecy, and in a fit of impatience, he went to the man and returned the money. This is fundamentally because secrecy requires steadfastness, patience, and willpower.

“O my son! Relate not your vision to your brothers...” Surah Yusuf – Ayah 5.

A weakness of man, just one of his many debilitating traits that cause him to sink, is revealing the details of his life to others and informing them of his personal affairs. This sickness is an old one in the annals of history. The soul loves to spread secrets and disseminate stories. The connection between this topic and that of this book is that whoever spreads his secrets will inevitably feel regret, sadness, and misery.

“…And let him be careful and let no man know of you.” Surah Al-Kahf – Ayah 19.

There is a saying of the desert people: ‘Maintain secrecy as there is fear of being killed if it is disclosed.’
