Just some food for thought

Just some food for thought for our readers.... Its quite obvious that many of us watch movies. What concerns me is, watching movies makes us fail in lowering our gaze. Some say you can look at opposite gender with a 'clean neeyah' but as far as my understanding of lowering the gaze is concerned, the Nobel Quran asks us to simply 'lower it' when it comes to non-mehrams (male or female).

That was one reason i quit movies and this note is being dropped to express the thought that there are 'other views' on this issue as well!

I was thinking, as you all know that in real life we see hords of non-mehrams everyday that we lower our gaze from. Then if we are doing the same while watching movies then whats the problem with that?

I think a not so bad answer to above could be... this life is a test that Allah [swt] has put us into so Allah is making us do it to show it to Him that we are His obedient servants. On the other hand watching movies and hence putting ourselves in a situation where we'll fail to lower our gaze at times and at times succeed is our decision which was never required from us.

I mean what'll we say to someone who goes to some strip club and while being there lowers his gaze?? ::)

I was thinking that watching movies would make us:

1) stare at the opposite sex (contrary to God's commands to lower our gaze)
2) let time passes by without remembering God (the best of us are those who remember God, standing up, sitting down, lying down - as stated in surah ali-imran)
3) condone non-acceptable behaviour, e.g. cursing, lying, killing, stealing which are common themes in movies (the best of us are those who do good and forbid evil).

Then again, I admit I am a mere mortal living in modern times, and hence, susceptible to modern temptations, watching movies count as 1 temptation.   Nonetheless, I seldom watch movies now, and hardly knows whats in and whats not, not counting the Alias tv series.  :o  I am trying to cut down though.  I have noticed when my faith is at its peak, I hardly watch tv, instead, spent time reading the qur'an, and other books.

Gotta get my faith strong again.   ;D

I watch movies and dont think it lowers my faith. I think that everything depends on 1. your intentions. and 2. do everyting in moderation. Islam isnt supposed to be hard right? Thats what everyone keeps telling me. I have been struggling with getting my Islam right for the last seven years..and keep coming across people who say to dont listen to music, dont watch movies, dont shake mens hands, et.et. and yes while many of these things can lead to problems and probably according to scholarly opinion are bad, they are secondary to my spiritual development.

Those same people who preached to me about the wrongs of movies, music et..et did not help me in one bit with my faith ..they never once said hey sister come pray with us, or hey sis you read this book..they never asked once how I was feeling or how my life was going. But now I digress:)
This is a whole other issue.

anyhow, I'm not condoning any negative behavior. we should lower our gazes.... but yo, if your a doctor right and your a male lets say, and a patient comes into your office and is female ..waht you gonna do? not look at her? not treat her? I'm not trying to instigate an argument but if i watch a movie and theres a man with his shirt off - and I watch this scene, Doesnt mean i'm lusting for him or something. Pure minds have pure thoughts.

peace:)

If you surround yourself with mud, dust, and dirt you are bound to get dirty no matter who well you intend to stay clean.

The doctor is serving a higher purpose of helping others.  How are any of us helping by watching movies?  In fact, it is doing the opposite.  It is keeping us asleep and in active.  Two hours... That is 1/8 of the day gone.  When we factor in all of the other things that we have to do like work, school, eat, pray, or whatever this life is calling us to do, this is a huge amount of time.  If we just watch one movie a week, this is equivilate to over four whole days of consecutive movie watching.  I know that most of us watch more than this.

"I think that everything depends on 1. your intentions. and 2. do everyting in moderation. Islam isnt supposed to be hard right? "

If I am an alcoholic, then is it okay that my intentions are to quit drinking and I am only drinking in moderation.  If anyone knows an alcoholic then you would know exactly how difficult it is for this person to quit drinking.

I am not intending to pick on you sister because I know many others who feel the same way.  You are just brave enough to post your beliefs.  I feel one of the failings of our Ummah is allowing this dunya to distract us.

I am not without fault but I am not trying to justify it.  I am actually trying to cut back.  I used to sit in front of the television for hours.  I have been cutting back more and more.  Now I actually am more annoyed by it than anything.  I think tv is like some food.  You have to get used to it before it is interesting or good.

If cutting back everyday on movies of television is not possible then try making one day a week free of these distractions.  Donate the time to qur'an or volunteering for others.  Take the money you would spend on a movie and give it in charity.  Remember that the money spent on charity will come back to save us from Hellfire.  My knowledge of the Simpsons or which actors were in the latest movies will not help me at all.  At best it will not further condmen me.  At worst it will add to my torment in Hell.  May Allah Forgive me.

For lala, let us pray for one another.  I like the book "The Prophet's Prayer Described" by Shaykh Al-Albani.  I sincerely pray that your life is going well and hope that you will find happiness.
May Allah Guide us all to the right Path and make Goodness easy and distance us from evil.
