My hijab hurrrrrrrrts!!!!!! :(

I posted this here and not in the Akhwat folder because some of the brothers might have sisters who have a similar problem or any suggestions.......

When I wear my hijab I put a safety pin at my chin and a straight pin on top. I need that safety pin for security since I am at school all day and without it, my hijab comes loose on the side. Well, now I have this small little area under my chin (the area my safety pin rests) and its this gross rash! It turns out I am allergic to nickel and the pin has nickel. It really burns and I don't wanna go into detail on how it looks but sometimes it bleeds and it makes me wanna  :'( cuz it itches and hurts sooooooooooo bad!

I went to the doctors and he gave me this cream that is useless cuz I use it when I sleep and when I'm at home and it works. But as soon as I wear my hijab it comes right back and by the time I get home it's the same as it was before.

I need some suggestions on what to do with my hijab and how to wear my pin. I need that safety pin. I tried to do without it on a 1/2 day at school and by the time 2nd Hour came along the left side was loose and I don't feel like having to fix my hijab after every hour!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Aww sis...may Allah swt help to clear up the rash asap! Ameen.

If you're allergice to nickel in particular, why not try a different kind of pin?  I have these plastic covered ones, where the only thing that comes in contact with your skin is the covering, whilst the metal bit stays tucked under, away from the skin.

Or...you could maybe think of wearing your hijaab in a way that you pin it everywhere else except under the chin!  Sounds impossible, but I assure it's do-able.  If you get your hijaab and make sure its tightish under the chin, bring it round, put a pin on top to secure it there, and then bring it to the front, putting another pin at the front.......inshaAllah try different methods  to see what's easiest for you :-*

Pray this helped somewhat!  Let me know how it goes.

man i knoww..when i started hijab those pins would hurt me too..i wasnt allergic or anything but i have this sensitive skin and i get red marks and itches very easily..well i kinda just got used to to it  :) alhamdulillah..anyways what i wanted to tell u was try the two piece hijabs for the time being when it hurts...and inshallah try sis Nisa's idea of putting the pin elsewhere..its not that hard u just have to wrap ur scarf tightly from under the chin..u need someone to show that to u...ask other hijabis around who wear it differntly..inshallah they would help..
man i have to thank ayeshaz for actually taking me into the girls room and showing me how to put a hijab on..i sucked..but now its all good  :-*

take care, hope u feel better.

Here's what you do, sis.

Position the pin to the side of the jaw, instead of the chin. No nickle or whatever should be touching your already affected skin. Don't even touch it except with the medication. Try not to irritate your skin while its healing.

Then, once you apply a regular pin or one of those plastic hijaab pins, tuck in that part of the hijaab under your jaw/chin. You'll have to first pin your hijaab loosely in order to tuck it in enough so that only the fabric touches your skin. That should work.

If you're using a stick pin on your head, I assume you're wrapping the bottom of hijaab around your head and pin it on top, right? If that's the case, either don't (just pin it to your shoulder instead), or continue to pin it on top but don't use a pin at your chin at all. With the right hijaab, you can get away with no chin pin if you wrap your hijaab around your head...maybe I'm confusing you now....just experiment with fastening your pin(s) elsewhere (ie, not on your chin). You may come up with something that you like better, insha'Allah. If that doesn't work, try the 2-piece hijaabs that are stretchy and don't require a pin at all, as already suggested.

Hope that made sense, and you heal soon, insha'Allah.  :)

If you really feel you need the pin, cover it with clear nail polish. This will prevent direct contact with the skin.

asalam alakum,
why not try the amira scarves. those are the two piece scarves that you just slip on and do not need to tye or hold together. they are really nice looking too....

I hear ya sis! my pins were leaving marks under my chin as well but wow u are allergic to nickel! May Allah(swt) make it easy for you ameen..

The first thing you have to make sure is find non-slippery hijab materials.. So basically i would suggest go for 100% cottons... or the turkish hijabs..(they are light and usually don't slip off).. once you have the material then u have to make sure that u have under the hijab "hat" or ammta.. For ammta you can shoot for a bandana or the smaller piece of the 2-piece hijab!!

soo u have a couple of options..

** Go for the 2 piece hijabs.. no pins.. no hassles  :-*

but if you are like me and are not down with the 2-piece look on "yourself" then, you can either...

* As sister sofia said start wearing the hijab as you normal do(i-e wear the ammta, put your hijab in a triangle) and then instead of pinning it under your chin, tightly and securely lift it so that you take it over your ear and are now taking it towards the center of the back of your head.. Now just take a big not "small" straight pin.. Take your straight pin in and out your hijab a couple times so that your ammta is also being pinned with your hijab.. CAREFULL, don't poke your head!!
And if you are not comfortable with 1 straight pins then you can take a couple small ones and then you can always bring you hijab on the side and tuck it.. wow it's hard to explain it  []!!

** My teacher wears it the syrian "teacher" style.. so i heard :)
You start off my wearing your ammta then put your hijab in a triangle and tie a secure knot around your chin ( kinda like how old grandma's wear it .. babushka(can't spell) ).. soo now you have 2 pieces hanging down..take one side and go through your knot.. now just fix your hijab and tuck it in your shirt..
And like if you are used to pinning your hijab around your shoulders then wear a jacket or another shirt.. be creative..

**Also you can do the whole straight pin thing with the shawl hijab as well...

i hope this helps a lil!!
