music in islam

[slm],

Hi.  I am a newly converted Muslim (I actually converted right before Ramadan this year).  I first began to inquire about Islam about a year and ago, after I really got to know the guy who is know one of my best friend's and my roommate in college.  The more I searched, the more truth I found.  I have been doing everything possible to educate myself about Islam for the past 7 months or so, and am doign so even more fervently now that my Christian family is asking me countless questions about "controversial" topics in Islam.  While many of the beliefs in Islam are very clear to me, there are a few issues which I am still qnclear on.

I have heard many different views from many different Muslims about whether or not music is allowed in Islam.  Some say not at all.  Some say, only for 'eid.  Others say, it's allowed, but men are to sing only for men and women only for women, and music is only not allowed when it is used to entice people.  I am very confused  ???.  The basis I have been given is that in one hadith (I am paraphrasing) [the prophet (saws) said that entertainment (pertaining to "singing and dancing"... this is the best definition I could find for the Arabic word used in this hadith) along with other things like pre-marital sex, men wearing silk, etc. are not to be practiced].  Another hadith I read (again this is huge paraphrasing) says that [on 'eid, when abu bakr came to the house of the prophet (saws) and was speaking to ayesha, he saw little girls singing in his house and asked why, ayesha responded that one can certainly celebrate as such on 'eid].

While I know there are many opinions on this topic, I am just hoping you guys can shed light on it.  This is one particular topic that hits home for me since one of my majors in college is classical vocal performance (the other engineering), and since I have been very involved in classical music for the greater part of my life.  I do not mean to create a disturbance by bringing a controversial topic to the board, I am just looking for some enlightenment.

Thank you all very kindly.  Your du'a for my family to understand islam and for me for guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Your brother,
Saam

walaikum salaam saam,

welcome to the madina and welcome to islam. may God guide you to what is good always...

as for the different views in music..this topic is banned here for a reason...  you'll hear the same thing here.. there's a broad spectrum.  and each person will argue that they are right. the best thing to do would be to find someone knowledgable in your area that you trust like an imam or knowledgable person and ask them to give you the details of the debate.  and gain some knowledge that way and make your decisions in your personal life be based upon that knowledge and guidance of good people.

hope that helps inshallah, take care

Assalamau Alaikum

i just wanted to say that when we say "music" in Islam, it really refers more  to the use of certain "musical instruments".

We can listen to a person just using his voice, and there are some beautiful

--anasheed (islamic songs)
--or qasidas
--or naats

where no musical instruments are used, and where the words are halal, of course.

if you need some links, since the topic is banned, you can message me.

Well I'll second to brother AbdulJalil since the type of music what he has described is NON CONTROVERSIAL one and I haven't listened any different opinion regarding such music so far.

Where ever other type of music and musical instruments are concerned there are large number of different opinions and it's really confusing to get in to those details.

May Allah guide us to the right path ........
