Flowers for the Graves

The discussion came about when we heard a respected Mufti say that purchasing flowers for the purpose of placing them on graves was an innovation and it's preferable to plant something instead, if you wanted to.  This makes sense to me as, he correctly pointed out, in some instances the flowers are removed from the graves by unsrcupulous people and re-sold.  Also, it is an expense that many may not be in a position to incur.

I need help in sourcing a Haadith that apparently refers to the Prophet Muhammed SAW placing a branch on a grave and advising that as long as the Branch remains green, it will make Zikr, the Thawaab of which will be for the occupant of that grave.

Has anyone come across this Haadith please?

Jazak Allah.

well, i have come across it, but the ending is more like "as long as the branch remains green, the occupant of the grave will not be subject to azaab (punishment)".

the exact Hadith & reference is beyond me at the moment.

Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:
Allah's Messenger  [saw] happened to pass by two graves and said: They (their occupants) are being tormented, but they are not tormented for a grievous sin. One of them carried tales and the other did not keep himself safe from being defiled by urine.
He then called for a fresh twig and split it into two parts, and planted them on each grave and then said: Perhaps, their punishment may be mitigated as long as these twigs remain fresh.

Hadith number in Sahih Muslim [Arabic only]: 439
