Salaams,
what is it about fantasy that brings out our ideals and our dreams
Forget that, how would Gandalf check his email?

I'm sad to say this but when PC's/Internet first came out at uni there were these multiplyaer games called MUD(Multi user dimension) based on Unix(telnet into the compute, logon and volia a world of keyboard clicks, no graphics just text) I used to spend something like hours upon this game as you met people from all over the world in a mythical world, it was so addictive that others on my course joined up.

A world that had many features in tune with LOTR, the current MUDs require you to pay up a fee Star Wars, Everquest however, some are still original to true D&D roleplyaing (Dungeons and Dragons) like Bladurs Gate and Morrowind. Does anyone else play RPGs?.

Someone was saying that this story is based on some battle with the Turks?  Has anyone heard this before?

I have to say I was a bit disappointed with the 3rd movie  :(.  I think the 3rd book was sooo good that perhaps the movie couldn't live up to my expectations, so I almost feel let down by it.  I don't know, maybe I shouldn't have read the book so soon again, and had read it after seeing the 3rd movie.

I was so hyped to see it, but I really didnt think it was as good as the other 2.  I could really get in to the previous ones and really felt myself drawn in to the story and could really feel for the characters.  In this one, I really did feel like just a detached observer  :(.

But alas, no more lord of the ring movies to look forward to  :(.  But hey, am going to go watch the 3rd one again, maybe it'll be better 2nd time round  :)

Salam,

salaampeaceshalom I felt exactly the same way. Although I still enjoyed the movie I could not help but feel disappointed.  I felt that the movie focused too much on the battles and graphics and not enough on the characters. In the last book there were so many little moments of true friendship, loyalty, love and bits humour that made the book so enjoyable and touching that were left out of the movie.   Also a lot of things needed closure..The fate of Saruman was left out. They didn't make it very clear in the movie how Eowyn and Faramir met and got married.. they left out the battle for the shire.. I think they  should have had some sort of epilogue to explain what happened to the hobbits that remanied and the rest of the fellowship..and middle earth in general after the defeat of Sauron...but I guess there's only so much one can do  without making the movie longer than it was.

<<Someone was saying that this story is based on some battle with the Turks?  Has anyone heard this before?>>

I've read something like this before but there are so many different theories and interpretations of the LOTR out there. Tolkien, according to Tolkien purists, would deny this or any interpretation because Tolkien stated he hated allegories. Still even though he said so I find it very hard not to make some comparisons. All the heroes in the story are from the Western part of Middle Earth and they are all white. While the men allied with Sauron are from the East and South and they are dark skinned (The movie and many others interpret the description of these  ppl in the book to make them resemble African and Middle eastern peoples)

Last year I went to the LOTR: The Two Towers exhibit that they had here in TO and they had the ring, costumes, armour, weaponry and some sections of the set on display (The ones I can remember are Saruman's throne and the dead marshes). It was pretty cool seeing all that stuff in real life..remember falling in love with one of the men's costumes ( I think it was Elrond's costume) and then thinking  why men can't men dress like that anymore..^_^

Salams...yeh i heard that they did film all of Saruman's scenes but then they cut them all out?? maybe they'll be in the extended version of the film when it comes out on dvd. Although the battle scenes were breathtakingly incredible, i too thought the book was better than the 3rd movie, and also would have liked to see the 'scouring of the shire' incorporated in the movie and how pippin and merry showed their qualities in the end...ah well.....take care all

[wlm]

p.s i was quite disappointed that nobody found the entwives, either in the book or the film!!!   :D

LOTR mini-review (Possible Spoilers be warned)

"Mans greatest strength and weakness is making a mountain of mole and viceversa. Both are his weakness and equally its his strength"

Looking closely at LOTR : ROFTK I had these perspectives :

1) JRR Tolkien actually made this litrerary work to fill the history that was missing in Europe (Middle Earth sounds similar to Middle Ages). Hence most if the heroes are European in origin
Hobbit : British
Elf : Scandanavian
Dwarf : Irish ???
2) The concept of the Evil from the East might be related to (1)
3) The references to bravery and fighting against humans is universal.
4) The character "Frodo" is intresting. Its not "size all that matters"
5) The Battle sequences reminded me how much the muslim world has forgetten our own *real* history
- The battle of Badr and the rest which were followed
- The battles which followed the death of Rasool saw
- The Battle of Constantinople when battle ships were "towed" through land, to overcome the naval blockade.
- The battle of Jerusalem, under the Khilafath of Saladin Ayyubi
We did encounter too many difficulties, but we did face them and we overcame.
6) The palace in Minas Thirith is Romanseque in architecture but looks like the arhces in Alhmabra except the stripes are black in the arches.
7) The most suttle thing in the last scenes where the entire gathering bow towards the little hobbits, reminded me that muslims never bowed to any other man, Only Allah does a muslim bow to .
I was wondering to our current state that we are in........
8) At the end of the movie everyone obeys their King. But without a Calif in our lives  we are investing *most* of our time, doing not even "nothing". At least doing "nothing"  spares damage. But its self inflicting damage thats like eating our own flesh.
Like a Persian saying I remember
"A hungry dog in a drought ravaged land. Sees a bone and it runs to it happily. It bites into it. in the process it damages its gums and blood gushes. In its hunger it feels that the blood is from the bone, but actually its from it own body and this makes it happy. But its only drinking its own blood. Its not gaining. On the other hand its loosing blood which will lead to its death, nothing less"

As an ummah we are in the dogs position. We have to struggle before helps arrives from Allah....

Nuff Said.

I wonder if a properly financed movie involving Sinbads Travel's (Without the Disney mistreatment) , sticking to the orignal story be. Its would be an intresting story I think..

Shukran for your time to read this post.

wlm,

interesting points in your review bro.... although i heard tolkien always insisted that he drew from no real life metaphors so i know many people didn't like how all the 'good' ppl were 'white' and the evil armies seemed to be 'dark'... but i mean they are elves and dwarfs and stuff they're different creatures!! they're not supposed to represent the real world!

You might be referring to the mention of "Evil from East" in my post. Yes indeed Tolkiein was against the notion of "metaphors" being associated in this story. "Evil from East" is a recurring theme even in Islamic schools, like towards end of time Dajjal is supposed to come from East.

On the other hand Tolkien actually tried in his artistic manner to bridge the missing history for Europe and yes its very localised.  He used his field of specialization which was lost European languages for this. The story of LOTR is  a story based on threads which is his lifes work. All the details that is in the book was made by the time the story was started.  This includes the language (spoken) and the BTW "the Hobbit"was first made for readings for his children.

What we can learn is mostly I have concentrated on and the my post refers to only that. The perspective of it is "a muslim's" perspective for the movie.  Think about the tales in the muslim world with its rich details be cinimatographed using currently available technology, its should be intresting I think.
