walaikum assalam sis,

this problem still remains with me, although partially :) ...

it's university ... so it's prolly a prof of a TA that would be conducting the class, rite. one way that i have been able to come over this problem is -- since it will mostly be ur TA or prof who would look for class participation... or who would need some kind of a response from the students, i think that if u can get comfortable talking with the prof / TA, then it really helps. like, u could go up to the prof or TA after or before class or tutorial and ask questions or have a discussion about some course material... that way u can get familiar with the person... and then when u will want to participate in class, u will not be intimidated by him/her. it does get better with each effort. plus if u think u wanna answer a particular question or participate at a certain time, then just relax urselves from within... breathe deeply... start slowly and try not to speak fast or blurt things out... i've realized that it's ok to take ur time and to sort out your thoughts as u speak, using... "errs" "umms" and "likes". and it also helps to be loud enough so atleast the ppl around you and the prof can hear u clearly... so that they dont ask you to repeat what u've just said! also, it helps to know ur stuff thoroughly before class ... so u know what u dont understand ... and then u could ask questions about that stuff.

with regard to the other students in class... it's easier to participate if u sit among a group of friends... that way u'll feel "safe"... and just ignore the ppl who stare at you while u speak in class... they are so annoying !

hope this bit of advice helps :)

was salaamualaikum.

as salaamu alaykum,

I attend a university with *huge* classes as well.. so I know what you mean.  Hmm.. does your class have a website discussion board?  If so, that's a great place to post your questions and comments on things, and since they are usually moderated by the professor/TA, they will definitely take notice of who participates and is involved.  the same is also true with emailing the professor.. for the most part, if you show some extra effort, they will take notice and reward you.

Maybe you can also visit your professor during his or her office hours, and talk with them about the course, the questions you have, and even your shyness.. insha'Allah he or she will have some sympathy with you :)  and maybe, if you become comfortable with him/her, it'll become easier to speak up in class.. ?

something else I do when I need to speak up in class is tell myself that, its important for people to see Muslim women as intelligent human beings.. and asking questions and participating in class shows that you are intelligent.. and that you can speak English :P (I remember once in class, after I asked a question someone was like "you speak English very well!" I was like  ::))

hehe.. may Allah make things easy for you :)

wasalaamu alaykum :-)

If you know the material you are going to present, well,  usually a person does ok.

Preperation, preparation, preparation.

Knowledge and confidence in the material will carry you through, even tho the knees are shakin.

Just make a dua before you begin... and if you prepared, you will be ok.
