I hope all of you are doing well.

I started attending this newly established masjid recently. MashaAllah it is very nice and is in the process of starting programs and classes. I was looking through the Islamic Horizons magazine when I found an advertisment for IslamiClipart. A CD with Islamic pictures, borders, cartoons, etc.

:-[ This made me think about starting up a newsletter at the masjid. None of the masjids in my area have newsletters. It would only take a few hours to set one up. The time I spend at friends' houses and watching TV could be used towards making this newsletter. Who knows, maybe someday it will improve and be longer or maybe even become a newspaper. I used to write for my school newspaper and yearbook last year so maybe that might help.

Now I need your help.  ;D I wanted to know how long a newsletter should be. I was thinking 2 or 3 pages. And then it can be adjusted to be longer in the future and inshaAllah improve. What should I include? What would be interesting to read? What your (if you have one) local newsletter has. Any ideas, suggestions, or comments would be very helpful. What would you like to see? How long do you think it would take to make one? Since this masjid has just recently been set up, not many people go there so making copies won't be hard. At my bro's university copies are 2 cents a page so some of the money I usually donate can go towards the newsletter.

Any input is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!  :-X

The first issue would be an intro. It would talk about the founding of the masjid and introduce our Imam and a few other important people in our masjid. It would also ask people to tell me what they want to see and they can email me their suggestions.

Then after this newsletter gets established.........

I'm thinking on the first page I could have an article and poem. Usually I'll try to write the poem or have other people I know contribute. I will also ask if anyone at the masjid has anything they want to contribute. Then maybe a question and answer section with commonly asked questions and answers by qualified sheikhs/sheikhas. On the second page it could have a hadith with commentary and an aya of the Quran with tafseer. Then maybe an excerpt froma book or a story of one of the prophets or sahaba or an important person. Any other suggestions?

Assalaamu alaikum,

Definitely start off with just four pages(one folded 11x17 page).  It's enough to fit a decent amount of info, and you won't have to deal with the prevalent syndrome of people looking at it and saying, "Oh no!  Too many pages!".

You might even want to get peole to advertise in it.  Your costs may not be so high, so see if local businesses would be interested.

You can take a look in the "Archive" section to see how Nasihah turns out.

Insha'Allah all is well :).. what a wonderfu thought!  :-X
I use to help out with our Masjid newsletter and my suggestion would be start small.. Like, when we started the newsletter it was front and back 11*17 and it still is alhamdulillilah.

some of things that we include in our newsletter.

1) activities in the masjid: lectures, youth group meetings, women committee meetings, board meetings etc...

2) Speical Islamic dates.. significance

3) whose who in the Majid? and like take a picture of the secretary,  E-board members, Imam and write something about them..

4) poetry/recipe section

5) and adds :)!!!

A special section on what's going on in the entire Muslim community.. special events etc

Good luck!!

slm,

Thanks a lot! MashaAllah those are some very good ideas! I have a question though. This is very ditzy...but, how would you print out a 11x17 paper? Like I know where to get the paper, but do I need a special printer? I have no clue about anything when it comes to printing out things in different size paper. Everything else, like scanning pictures and finding material to use, I think I can handle. I tried to contact my masjid to talk to the Imam but they don't have an email address and they never answer the phone. InshaAllah I will try to talk to him about this after salat. I hope he'll let me! Your du'a would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!  :-X

About the printing, you would have to have a printer capable of accepting 11x17 sheets of paper in order to print onto it.
If you don't have access to that, I'd suggest calling up a copy place and get a quote opn how much it would cost for them to do it for you.
I know for a 12 page newsletter, which we ordered 250 copies of, the cost came to about $1 a copy(all 12 pages)... so inshaAllah it shouldn't be too hard finding people to contribute to this.
