A Q on 2-be goom wear?

salam alaikum

I have a q for the bros who have already worn it before settling with their better half.

While everyone talks about the beauty that is skin deep, it is only obvious that outer
impression plays an important role (if not for the girl, at least for her family :) )

What dress code would be appropriate for an indian boy going to meet his desi girl,
arranged by the ppl bac home with excellent compatibility of deen and family?

There are two occassions -

* First time seeing the girl (although they have seen each other's pics), which also has
endorsement from the Hly prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sahlam

* Engagement function announcing the mutual agreement between both parties (not nikah)

Would a traditional outfit (kurta+pajama) for one and a formal suit for another do?

jazak Alah khair

I'd say suit the first time and traditional outfit for the engagement.

We had this very amusing thread last year where a brother anonymously asked the same question.. and YES he did get engaged and married Alhamdulillah... guess the Madina can help people ;)

here it is: Meeting the Parents

ASAK Anon,

I would suggest the following :

       1. First Meeting:   Business Casual
       2. Engagement:   Good looking traditional
       3. Nikah day:        Sherwani (Dress popular in Hyderabad , Aligarh,
India formal traditional dress - Looks like Chapan
-- Afghani dress worn by Hamid Kharzai on USA trip)
       4. Walima:            Informal sport suit.

P.S. : I am no expert in dress issues, Please take my suggestion a 1 pound
         PINCH of salt :)

Suit?  When meeting the girl for the first time?  Isn't a suit a tad much?  I mean "suit" to me, means Hugo Boss...something apt for a walima reception maybe.  Unless everyone means "suit" as in jacket (not the winter kind), nice clean collared shirt (color is always helpful...blue or green, maybe?), dress pants and a pair of good shoes (NO tie, even if you wear one regularly, and a belt is a must, and please please....istree-shuda kapray only).

Yup for an engagement a nice kurta shalwar would work well (no khussas..ew, and KURTA not kameez, and shalwar not pajama...color also helps).

Alabd...I like your suggestions...except on the day of the walima, make it formal.  Like a really tight looking pinstriped suit.  And your tie (should you decide to wear one) should match the girl's clothes.  And on the day of the wedding (shaadi, baraat, rukhsati, nikkah...any and all) wear a nice sherwani (stick to a light color...grooms should stand out) with a saafa that matches her gharara.  Perfect.  (Oh and remember...avoid khussas at all times, although they look decent with the sherwaani).

This is so exciting!  My brother just got married (mashaAllah), and the excitement really hasn't worn off...so excuse the hyperness.

I pray it works out for you.

Wasalaam.

for the first meeting:

dude, just wear whatever you feel comfortable in and get the most compliments in :)

neither wear something *too* casual (jeans) nor *too* formal (suit and a tie).  something in between.

a brother i know wore a black thoub :)  (he swears it wasn't symbolic :P)

for the engagement:

if it's a formal event with a ceremony and stuff, wear something formal.  otherwise, keep it at the same level as what you wore when you first saw the girl.

wassalamu alaikum

Me seconds that...... for me it can even be a white qamiz+shalwar with black imama.. or simply a white imama on a white qamiz+shalwar.. t'rust me :P ... thats my dress on Eids :)

And you guys haven't seen good pajamas and khussaz yet!! There are these leather khussaz available here in black and dark shades of brown and look so gr8.. my friend wore them at his wedding (the dinner night b4 shaadi and valima).. and well.. he looked gr8... gr16 actually.

Jeans isn't a bad idea too, goes with all your shirts :) ... Why do ppl stict to usual stuff like there should be something unique in things that you do!

lol okay.

istree-shuda kapray = ironed clothes

khussas = those crazy aladdin shoes (actually i might have to change my mind...it sounds pretty cool)

saafa ... well we call it a saafa...i know other people call it other stuff...it's the stuff the guy wears on his head.  they have cool double-colored ones now.  like my sister-in-law wore a red gharara, and my bro wore his off-white sherwani (with the khussas...lol) and his off-white saafa had one red piece of cloth, which matched the gharara...but it wasn't all red, because it would have looked odd...

kurta vs. kameez = a kameez is more stitched.  (man how do i explain this)...basically a kurta is the cool stuff...it looks different, it's baggier, but only because it's less fitted (talk about a redundant description).  It doesn't have cuffed sleeves, or puffed sleeves...or any such thing.  It doesn't have a collar (like the ones on shirts...although it may have a sherwani-type collar).

shalwar vs. pajama = shalwars are much baggier, a pajama is tighter.
