Just a curious question.......I was wondering why and how does the crescent moon and five-pointed star  represent Islam? When was it introduced and by whom?

Hmm,
I'm no expert but I seem to remember that the crescent moon is used because of the lunar nature of the Islamic calendar;  the new month begins with the sighting of the cresecent.   The five pointed star is used to represent the five pillars of Islam.  Here is an interesting link:
