Hello All, I am very happy to see such a supporting discussion board as this. My name is Vi and I am an undergraduate college student. I am currently working on a research project regarding Muslim discrimination in the workplace, and I would very much like to hear your, or another's, experience regarding this topic. Any stories or thoughts to share would be much appreciated. Please feel free to leave your contact information here or email me at danvi@uclink.berkeley.edu. Thank you so much for your time. Sincerely, Vi |

Hi Vi, I believe there was a study done in England by a Muslim organization recently. They sent out resume's in response to ads. They would use"muslim sounding names" and ordinary "british names" and sometimes send the SAME resume with different names to the same company for the same job!! and of course the british named resume would get the call back... interesting eh. I also notice that wearing hijab and doing interviews are very different than they were pre 9/11. The economy was definitely much better than now, making it alot more competitive.. but I feel like hijab adds an extra negative. They are kinda thinking 'is she a fundamentalist'... 'it would be kind of weird having her here'... 'what with the war and everything she could just go off the edge one day'. I dunno it's kind of odd when you are overqualified for the job and they tell you right in the interview "'if we don't hire you it's not because of anything about you.. it's about organizational fit" or something like "well... you're obviously well-spoken but do you have the technical skills to know how to use a computer..." and when you tell them you're a computer science major, etc etc.. they're like "<cough> ahh well i see that, but it's not the same". Basically I would like to think there's no discrimination, and they're just stupid.. but i guess that would put me on da nile. (denial) |
