In addressing the members of the French Parliament and the Senate Committee

Through a mass email campaign to gain their support in convincing the National Assembly

that passage of Chirac's proposed law banning headscarves and other religious symbols

in public schools and work places

is just plain wrong!

LETS PICK UP WHERE THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PROTEST LEFT OFF

Phase II:

Stop Religious Repression in France
President Chirac contends that the proposed law is necessary to prevent the use of overt religious symbols in state operated schools from undermining the principle of the separation of church and state enshrined in a law of 1905.  Current jurisdiction has been ambiguous, stating that the wearing of a headscarf is not in itself against the constitution. Now, in an attempt to change the direction that current political winds are blowing, Chirac is attempting to resolve his political crisis by introducing a law, in essence to "correct" the Constitution to make wearing headscarves illegal??

The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights guarantees in Article 18 that individuals have the right to practice their own religion.

We cannot sit passively by and accept the blatant violation of the civil rights and liberties of the Muslim community in France.  Chirac's draft bill will be debated in Parliament the week of February 2, 2004 and should be approved within the next three months.  We still have time to make a difference!

Chirac's party holds 364 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly…the draft bill only needs 288 votes to pass…surely we can stand in solidarity and convince 77 to vote with the moral majority and defeat a law designed to designate a piece of cloth, worn by Muslim women as a symbol of modesty, which hardly qualifies as a political statement, and make it illegal…thereby removing all her freedom of choice and expression of religion.

Lastly, consider this: Did you know that in May 2001, the National Assembly passed an equally controversial anti-religious bill with only 15 of the 577 members present?? News reports throw out numbers like "364 seats out of 577" (above), adding that only 288 are needed to pass the bill into law – numbers designed to taunt us into thinking we cannot make a difference, but we certainly can, if the number of assembly members who actually show up to vote AGAINST the law is GREATER than the number of members who vote to pass the law!!
